SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team earned their second conference win of the weekend in a dominating win over the visiting Evergreen State College. The Warriors rode a strong final ten minutes in the first half and coasted to an eventual 93-59 victory.
Head Coach Taylor Kelly spoke highly of his squad following the afternoon matchup. "I'm really proud of our teams effort tonight. Our guys were committed to doing their job and it showed. Talin Lewis was sensational tonight, his energy and effort were game changing. It feels good to complete the weekend sweep."
The first half started sluggish for both squads on the offensive side of the ball, with the Warriors clinging to a 12-10 advantage as the two teams neared the midway point of the first half. From that point on, Corban used stifling defense and balanced offense to go on a 29-11 run to close out the half and take a 20-point lead into the locker room. It was an impressive showing for the Navy and Gold as eight players scored in the first half and the team forced 14 Geoduck turnovers.
Evergreen found a way to make things interesting, starting the second half on an 11-2 run to trim the Corban lead to nine. The Warriors settled back in, getting a couple easy buckets in transition to extend their lead. Corban stole the momentum for good after a Psalm Maduakor offensive rebound, Kendall Moore served an underhand dish to Talin Lewis at the rim who threw down one of the most impressive dunks of the season to push the Warrior lead back out to 20 points and they never looked back.
It was a loaded box score for the Navy and Gold as they had nine players register a bucket, nailed 10 three-pointers, forced 20 Geoduck turnovers, and shot 47% from the floor in one of their most complete games of the season.
Talin Lewis (26 PTS, 3 STL) led all scorers on the afternoon and was joined in double-figures by Mateo Escheik (16 PTS, 8 REB), Psalm Maduakor (14 PTS, 8 REB) and Denis Kirichenko (11 PTS, 11 REB). The offensive effort from the group was impacted heavily by Kendall Moore who dished out a game high 6 assists.
TESC was led in scoring by Austin Curry (18 PTS), Mitch Wetmore (15 PTS) and LaBrandon Price (10 PTS).
Corban (10-8, 5-5 CCC) has already earned a forfeit victory for their scheduled game on Jan. 11 against Bushnell, who cannot participate in the contest due to COVID-19 problems within the Beacons program. With the forfeiture, the Warriors have climbed back to .500 in CCC play. "Our group is starting to figure some things out and Warrior Nation should be excited to be a part of this teams continued growth," said Coach Kelly.
The Navy and Gold will take the floor next on Friday, Jan. 14 in Lewiston, Idaho against Lewis-Clark State College. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.
