Seniors Lead No. 3 Corban Women’s Volleyball to Sweep of Wolves, Eyes CCC Tournament as Two-Seed

SALEM, Ore. – The "Core Four" came through with a storybook ending in what will soon be the end of their Corban University Women's Volleyball program careers, as the Warriors (27-3, 20-2) downed the Walla Walla University Wolves (1-21, 1-21) in straight sets, 25-12, 25-12, and 25-9 to finish the 2022 Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season as the No. 2 team in the CCC.

"I am proud of the team and how they played with focus throughout the match tonight," Corban Head Coach Kim McLain shared after their final game of the 2022 regular season. "We look forward to preparing this week in anticipation for a tough CCC tournament."

The Warriors made quick work of the Wolves this evening, shaking off a couple of rocky starts in sets one and two to finish each with some incredibly lengthy streaks of offense. After Walla Walla earned their first three points and a 3-1 lead on Warrior' miscues, Corban quickly took the lead back and gave themselves plenty of distance with 11-straight points, forcing the Wolves into calling both of their timeouts in an attempt to slow the pace of play.

Despite hitting just .226 at the net in the first set, the Warriors were able to ride their defense to a 1-0 set lead, as the blockers held the Wolves to a negative attacking percentage of -.111in their 25-12 first set win.

The second set began in similar fashion to the opening period, but multiple groupings of three-point and more runs by Corban stretched the lead once again, running away with the set in another 25-12 win, with an exclamation point kill from senior outside hitter Avari Ridgway.

As the Warriors had settled into their offensive/defensive scheme, Walla Walla couldn't muster enough to force Corban into changing their gameplan, as an early eight-point run gave Corban a 13-4 lead, with the Wolves only scoring five more points the entirety of the set. The Warriors smashed 16 kills and only two errors in the final set to hit .609 in only 23 attempts.

Another kill from Ridgway sealed the deal for Corban, winning their 20th conference game of the year for the second-straight season and guaranteeing their fourth most wins in a single-season as well with 27.

Ridgway set the pace with 14 kills and only a pair of errors to finish the night with a .462 hitting rate, adding a pair of service aces and three block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Rylee Troutman added 12 kills to complete the 2022 season as the CCC kills leader with 421, smashing an even higher attacking percentage with a .579 line. Senior Ally Schmidt tied Ridgway for the game-high in service aces with a pair of her own.

Senior setter Jadyn Mullen once again led all players with 16 assists, while sophomore setter Courtney Garwood added 15 dimes in a reserve role with the second rotation. Senior libero Kealani Ontai set a game-high in digs with eight in a short three-sets of play, while sophomore middle blocker Allyson Reid added five kills and a game-high five block assists.

The Wolves were led by middle blocker Gabrielle Browning who hit eight kills and added three digs in the backcourt, while Browning's younger sister and WWU outside hitter Sahara Browning tied the game-high in digs with eight and provided an additional five kills.

Setters Anja Cole and Meherio Krainer each tallied six assists to lead their squad offensively, with Cole earning the Wolves' lone service ace.

The No. 3 Corban Women's Volleyball team sets their sights on a CCC Tournament Championship now with the postseason beginning in less than a week, as the Warriors will travel to La Grande, Ore. to enjoy a first-round bye to advance straight to the CCC Semifinals. Corban will play the higher of the remaining seeds following the Quarterfinal results and will await to see who their opponent will be on Friday morning.
