KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Corban University men's basketball team finished off its 2021-22 regular-season campaign on Saturday evening, defeating Northwest University on the road, 79-64.
"I loved the way our guys responded tonight," said head coach Taylor Kelly. "We played smart, tough, and super unselfish. Our team did a great job of locking in on defense in the second half and that really allowed us to separate. I love where our team is at heading into this playoff run. Warrior Nation, we are excited to represent you on Wednesday night!"
As a team, Corban shot a stellar 53.2% from the floor and an even 50% from downtown in the triumph.
The Warrior defense was also firing on all cylinders in the win, outscoring the Eagles 15-3 in points off turnovers. The Navy and Gold forced 15 turnovers in total, while only giving it away six times. Corban's assist-to-turnover ratio of 25-to-6 was one of the squad's best all season.
Taylor Anderson dished out a team-leading eight of those assists on Saturday, while also racking up 10 points. Mateo Escheik was the leading scorer for the Warriors, ending the night with 18 points of an efficient 8-of-13 shooting effort. Turning in his third-best scoring effort of the season, Talin Lewis ended the night with 14 points on 5-of-8 from the floor.
Corban dominated down low, outscoring the hometown team 38-20 in the paint. Darius Henderson played a key role in that success, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine boards in a dominating display under the rim.
For the Eagles, CaCoa Chatman led all performers with a 25-point effort. Jason Brown, Jr. was the only other member of the hometown team to reach double figures, notching 11 points and four assists.
Corban finishes the 2021-22 regular season with a 19-11 overall record and 14-8 record in conference play. Lewis-Clark State College earned an upset road win over Oregon Tech tonight, finishing with an identical record in CCC competition. The squad from Lewiston boasts a tiebreaker—determined by each team's wins over squads with a record above .500 throughout the year—over the Navy and Gold, meaning LC State will take the third seed for the upcoming CCC Tournament, and Corban will enter as the fourth seed.
Southern Oregon will be the tournament's fifth seed, and the Warriors and the Raiders will matchup in the CCC Quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (February 23) inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. An in-depth preview of the tournament will be released on CorbanWarriors.com prior to the game.
