WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Corban University women's lacrosse team got in the win column on Saturday afternoon, cruising to an 18-6 win against NCAA Division III Whitworth University in a game hosted at Whitman College. It's the first win of the young season for the squad.
"I'm so proud of how we played today," said head coach Kylie McMinn. "We were composed on offense, made great connections in transition, and communicated well on defense. We had multiple goal-scorers and multiple assists and we really showcased our ability to finish today. We're looking forward to our first home win!"
The Warriors displayed their depth in the victory, boasting seven different scorers.
Despite the 18-goal output, neither team found the net in the first quarter. An eleven-goal explosion in the second quarter gave the Navy and Gold a significant lead by the half, and then Payton Nuse and the defense held the Pirates scoreless in the second half to put an exclamation mark on the strong team effort.
Sydney Davis led the charge in the balanced Warrior attack, netting a team-leading five goals. Josie Brence and Sarah Whitbey each earned hat tricks, while Geneen Impreso, Megan Lia, and Meredith Pinkerton ended the afternoon with braces. Brence and Impreso were also credited with assists in the victory.
A goal from defender Devyn Davis rounded out the Warriors' 18-goal performance, which was more than enough cushion for Nuse in goal, who ended the game with 13 saves.
Corban (1-1) will be back home next weekend, hosting a pair of in-state rivals from the NAIA. The Warriors will welcome Multnomah at 5 p.m. on Friday in a 7v7 exhibition, before hosting Eastern Oregon University at 1 p.m. on the following afternoon.
