Navy and Gold Softball Takes One from Northwest on Friday’s Tripleheader

BELLEVUE, Wash. – The Corban University softball team dropped the first and third game of Friday's tripleheader in Bellevue. Anastasia Iosia was a bright spot for the Warriors on a dreary day in the Northwest.

Head coach Danyelle Huber commented, "Hard fought games today. Came up short but a lot to grow and learn from. The game is a game of inches and taking advantage of the opportunities that are given to you. The girls will get back up and be ready for the next one."

The first game of the trio went to the hometown team after an Eagle homerun gave them the lead in the first inning.

Alise Olson started things off in the circle for the Navy and Gold, but the Northwest offense proved too much, and Tatiana Liu relieved Olson in the fourth frame.

Corban made several comeback efforts including a triple off the bat of Meri McElligot and savvy baserunning in the fifth, but were unable to cut Northwest's lead. The Eagles took game one, 7-5.

Iosia blasted a three-run homerun early in the second game to put Corban on the board first. She continued to have a monster day at the plate, recording four total RBIs, and recording a double and a run.

Two of Corban's three hits in game two belonged to Iosia, and the third was a solo-homer from Madison Wyllie. The Warriors took game two 5-2.

Holly Gonzales earned the win in game two, tallying seven strikeouts on four hits and two runs.

The third contest saw Gonzales once again in the circle. She was not able to fend off the Eagle offense and gave up seven hits and six runs in the second stanza. Liu came in in relief once again.

Down 6-0 going into the fourth, the Navy and Gold started their comeback. It began with another double from Iosia and was continued when Cambria Kerze was hit by a pitch, putting runners on second and third for the visiting team. Karla Calderon reached on an error by the Eagle shortstop before Liu went yard for the first time this season in grand slam fashion.

Errors nearly cost Northwest the game allowing Corban to tie things up in the seventh. The game continued until the bottom of the ninth inning when Alyssa Maldonado scored Kayla Stanley on a single through the left side to take game three, 7-6.

Iosia had a truly fantastic day at the plate totaling six hits, five RBIs, and three runs.

The Warriors will return to action next weekend at home against the No.1-ranked Owls of Oregon Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday at Warrior Field.
