SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University softball team fell in each of its games against No. 1-ranked Oregon Tech on Friday. Owl ace Sarah Abramson tossed a perfect game to lead the visitors to a 4-0 win in game one, and OIT's bats produced nine runs in a 9-2 game-two triumph.
"The Warriors put up a fight today," said head coach Danyelle Huber. "The hits came around in that second game, and Holly [Gonzales] pitched a great first game. We are able to continue fighting back and keeping our heads high, learning from each time on the field."
Abramson was the story in the series opener, striking out nine in seven immaculate innings in the circle. McKenna Armantrout and Jensen Becker collected RBI singles in support of Abramson, as the Owls' scoring came via a pair of two-run frames.
Easy to overlook given Abramson's performance was the effort of her counterpart. Holly Gonzales battled in the circle for the Warriors in the defeat, surrendering just a pair of earned runs in the duel with Abramson. Game one marked just the second time all season the Owls had been held to four runs or less in a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contest.
In game two, the Owls capitalized early on a trio of first-inning free passes, as McKenzie Staub helped her own cause by ripping a two-run double to left. The visitors tacked on four more in the second and another in the third, extending their lead to seven after three complete.
Corban got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, when Paia'ala Wilcox-Molina slashed a two-run single to the base of the fence in right field. The Navy and Gold put together another promising opportunity in their next half-inning at the plate, as well, loading the bases with just one out; unfortunately, nothing would come of the threat, as OIT's Staub was able to escape the jam unscathed.
The Owl lead was stretched back to seven when Kacie Schmidt ripped a two-run homer to left field in the top of the sixth.
That would be where the score would stay, as the top-ranked Owls claimed each of the day's games, the first via exceptional pitching, and the second courtesy of timely hitting.
Staub collected the victory in the circle for head coach Greg Stewart and company, tossing five innings and scattering seven hits, all while allowing just the two earned runs.
The Navy and Gold actually matched the Owls in hits in game two with seven, an encouraging yet equally frustrating fact from the loss.
The Warriors were paced offensively in game two by Wilcox-Molina, who had each of the team's RBIs, as well as Karla Calderon (2-for-3, R) and Anastasia Iosia (2-for-3, R), who each collected a pair of knocks.
Corban (12-20, 6-9 CCC) and OIT will be back in action at Warrior Field tomorrow, wrapping up their weekend series with a conference battle at 11 a.m., and a non-conference contest at 1 p.m.
