SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University softball team battled in a pair of losses to No. 1-ranked Oregon Tech on Saturday. A day after throwing a perfect game yesterday, a no-hitter from Sarah Abramson helped OIT claim a 5-0 victory in game one of the doubleheader, and the visiting Owls fended off a late comeback bid to hold onto a 6-4 victory in the non-conference series finale.
"The Warriors fought even harder today!" said head coach Danyelle Huber. "We showed resilience through the whole weekend. Keeping top-ranked OIT on its toes all weekend is something we'll be holding our heads high about. A lot of pieces fell into place defensively and even offensively for us. We look forward to the rest of the season; we're taking it one series at a time."
The Owls struck first in game one, bringing home a run in their first at-bats courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Jayce Seavert.
That's where the score would stay until the top of the fourth, when Kennedy Jantzi doubled OIT's lead with a towering solo blast over the left-center fence. The visitors' scoring was rounded out with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and a pair of unearned tallies in the seventh.
Of course, the story once again was Abramson's effort in the circle, as she struck out six en route to the third no-hitter of her career.
Holly Gonzales was once again impressive in the circle for the Navy and Gold, saddled with the tough-luck loss after surrendering just two earned runs in a complete-game performance.
Seavert helped the Owls kick off the non-conference finale with a bang, hooking a two-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole in the first inning of game two, giving OIT an early advantage.
Corban cut that lead in half when Christine Warren knocked a pinch-hit RBI single through the middle in the bottom of the fourth, but the Owls answered back with two of their own in the following stanza.
The resilient Warriors chipped away with another run in the bottom of the fifth, when Karla Calderon brought home Taylor Beasley with an RBI groundout. That made it a 4-2 contest with two frames left to play.
After the Owls extended their lead to four with two runs in the seventh, the Warriors were staring down a four-run deficit heading into their final at-bats, with Abramson returning to the contest to finish it out for the visitors.
An opposite field RBI triple to right from Beasley scored Samantha Martinez in the Warriors' last opportunity at the dish, and then another RBI grounder from Calderon pulled the hometown team within two. The comeback bid would come up short, however, as Abramson quelled the rally to finish off the four-game sweep for OIT.
"Again, a round of applause for Holly [Gonzales] and the pitching staff this weekend," Huber added, reflecting on the squad's competitiveness. "Also, props to Taylor [Beasley] and Sammy [Martinez] for breaking Abramson's no-hit streak against us."
Beasley finished with a 3-for-4 days (2 R, RBI) out of the leadoff spot, and all but two members of the Navy and Gold's starting lineup collected a hit in game two, helping the Warriors out-hit their adversaries by a 10-8 margin.
Corban (12-22, 6-11 CCC) will continue its homestand next weekend, hosting University of Providence for a four-game set on Friday and Saturday at Warrior Field. Game times on Friday are slated for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
