SALEM, Ore. – The senior class was the star of the show for the Corban University softball team on Friday afternoon. The Warriors won 4-3 by way of the walk-off in game one of the series. Tatiana Liu and Carter Thornton battled in a hard-fought pitcher's duel before Madison Wyllie scored Taylor Beasley with a squeeze-bunt in the bottom of the eighth. Alise Olson dominated in the circle for the Corban in game two. Free passes plagued the University of Providence and stolen bases propelled Corban to a 10-2 victory in five innings.
"Great wins by the Warriors today!" Head coach Danyelle Huber commented after the contests. "They played their game and fought every inning to make timely adjustments. It was a team effort to earn the wins today. The trust and confidence in this team is shining and you can see it with the two battles and walk-off wins."
The Argos got up on the Warriors early in game one thanks to a series of timely hits and heads-up base running. The visiting team was not afraid of Holly Gonzales who, just the weekend before, had held the No. 1-ranked Owls to their second lowest scoring conference game of the season. To stop the bleeding, Huber put in Liu. The Hawaii native shut things down and continued on into the eighth.
Argo Ace Carter Thornton dominated the Warrior offense through three frames. Anastasia Iosia put the Navy and Gold on the board with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Kaycee Arase who reached by way of an Argo miscue.
In the bottom of the sixth the Warriors had their eyes on a comeback. Iosia led things off with a walk, followed by a single from Paia'Ala Wilcox-Molina putting a runner in scoring position for Samantha Martinez. Stellar base running from Iosia advanced her to third before Martinez singled for the second time in the game scoring Iosia. A base running miscue ended the inning early for Corban. Headed into the final frame the score was tied at three apiece.
With one out recorded in the top of the seventh, Gracie Fleming laid down a beautiful bunt single. The Warriors were looking to snatch back the momentum that they had just earned. The Warriors were hoping to turn two to keep the momentum in their favor when McKenna Montgomery stepped up to the plate for the Argos. She hit a soft ground ball to second base and Cambria Kerze and Karla Calderon teamed up to get the last two outs of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth with momentum on their side, Christine Warren pinch-hit for Beasley and was granted first base thanks to an error by the Argo third baseman. It was just a matter of time before, Warrior veteran, Wyllie found herself in a familiar position with the go-ahead run on third base. Wyllie bunted softly down the first base line scoring Beasley who broke for home on the pitch. The Warriors took game one, 4-3.
Olson, who had thrown to just one batter in the game prior, started in the circle for the hometown squad in game two. She earned her fifth win of the season in the complete game victory allowing only three hits.
The Warriors put two across in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The second stanza was silent for both teams, but in the top of the third the Argos tied things up with a two-run bomb from Taylor Mathews.
The Warriors scored four in both the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the fifth. Iosia's bases-loaded triple led to a run-rule victory for the Navy and Gold.
Martinez (3-4, BB), Kerze (2-5), and Wilcox-Molina (2-5) tallied multi-hit performances for Corban.
The Warriors will return to their home dirt again tomorrow morning to challenge Providence in another doubleheader battle. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
