SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University softball team displayed their offensive depth and Holly Gonzales threw a gem for the Warriors in game one. Providence tallied 11 hits, but the hometown squad capitalized on three Argo miscues and took the first contest, 7-3. Then in game two, the visiting Argos battled with the Warriors until the final frame, plating a season-high 13 runs and earning their first win of the season.
Corban's bats were on fire in the bottom of the first. Kaycee Arase and Paia'ala Wilcox-Molina each went yard and the Warriors capitalized on Argo miscues to put them ahead, 4-1.
Providence continued to battle and plated another run in the top of the second.
A double off the bat of Meri McElligott followed by Samantha Martinez reaching the hard way and a wild pitch put Taylor Beasley in a position to score a run on a groundout to the Argo shortstop.
Holly Gonzales came in to relieve Tatiana Liu in the top of the third. She struckout the side and sent Corban to the bottom of the third leading 5-2. Gonzales had a shut down game in the circle, recording seven strikeouts.
Karla Calderon joined Arase and Wilcox-Molina in the homerun club in the bottom of the sixth, plating the Warriors' final run of the game. Corban took game one, 7-3.
Corban rattled the bats again in game two. The Warriors got four runs on three hits and two errors in the bottom of the first. Sarah Bradshaw launched her first career homerun and the Navy and Gold was savvy on the basepath stealing three in just the first inning.
In the second, Corban sent six batters to the plate and scored three of them. Providence's Taylor Mathews came in to pitch for Jaden Williams and followed her appearance in the circle with a double to right center in the top of the third.
The Argos showed discipline at the plate and Alise Olson was relieved by Tatiana Liu midway through the third frame. The Argos continued to pressure Corban's defense and the Navy and Gold turned to Gonzales with one out recorded in the third. After a big third inning, the visiting team had things at Warrior Field all tied up at seven apiece.
In the top of the sixth the Argos took control and put six more on the board. They took advantage of a rare Warrior error at the hot corner to take a 13-7 lead.
Corban started a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but the six-run deficit was too much and the Argos took game four, 13-9.
Several Warriors had multi-hit performances including Beasley (4-7, 3 RBI, R) Wilcox-Molina (3-5, 4 RBI, R) and McElligot (3-7, 3 R).
The Warriors will return to conference play next weekend at Eastern Oregon University. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday.
