LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Corban University softball team traveled to La Grande to take on the (RV) Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers in a four-game series. High winds contributed to the difficulty of the first contest, but the Warriors took game one, 5-4.
Head coach Danyelle Huber commented, "The Warriors brought all they had today every pitch and every inning, and came away with a big win in the first game today. Timely hits and stellar base running kept our offense alive while Holly commanded the mound that first game. Even In the second game the Warriors fought and came out just shy. Looking forward to tomorrow and another opportunity for them to play together."
Game one was a nail biter with no scoring until the top of the third. It was then that Corban's catcher, Morgan Gleeson reached via the walk and Taylor Beasley blasted a ball over the left field fence on a 1-2 count to plate the first two runs of the game.
Despite giving up an early lead, the Mounties continued to battle, and answered back in a big way with a homerun off the bat of Haley Ebner. This put the Mounties up 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the sixth the Warriors started their comeback. Beasley walked, Madison Wyllie reached via a fielder's choice that resulted in no outs on the play, Maddie Ogles battled to a full count and Beasley and Wyllie stole on the pitch putting two in scoring position for Anastasia Iosia. She scored Beasley on a single to right, and Paia'Ala Wilcox-Molina followed that with a single to right center, scoring Wyllie and Iosia giving the Warriors a 5-4 lead.
The Mounties tried to tie things up in the sixth, but were shut down by Corban's infield.
Holly Gonzales went the distance in the circle for the Navy and Gold, recording her eighth win of the season. She scattered nine hits and six strikeouts in the victory.
Corban was the first team to score in game two. Iosia reached on an error by the Mountie shortstop to get things going for Corban. Karla Calderon singled and Cambria Kerze doubled to put Corban up 1-0 in the top of the second frame.
In the bottom of the fourth Eastern took advantage of a few free passes and Ebner doubled, scoring three to make the score 3-1 in favor of the home team headed into the top of the fifth.
Eastern's Grace Gaither singled down the left field line scoring Hannah Tyree in the fifth and recording the final run of the game for Eastern.
Corban managed to scrape another one across in the top of the seventh, but Eastern took game two, 4-2.
The Warriors return to action tomorrow at Peggy Anderson softball field in La Grande, Ore. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
