Navy and Gold Softball Falls to (RV) Eastern Oregon

LA GRANDE, Ore. – After an upset victory in game one on Friday, the Corban University softball team was hungry to take another game from the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers on Saturday morning, but after ten tough innings the Mounties prevailed and took the third game of the series, 7-6.

Holly Gonzales threw another masterful game for the Navy and Gold. The southpaw delivered eight strikeouts and totaled 157 pitches in the contest.

Corban made the most of Mountie errors scoring only one earned run in the contest, but plating an additional five.

Eastern came out strong in the morning game. The Mountie defense saw Corban's hitters go three up, three down in the top of one and then the home town squad rattled off four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first.

Corban answered back in the top of the second, starting with a triple from senior slugger, Kaycee Arase. Anastasia Iosia singled to left center, driving home the Warriors' first score and only earned run of the game.

EOU made the score 5-1 in their favor with an unearned run in the bottom of the second.

The fourth frame was a big one for Corban. The Warriors took advantage of miscues and caused Eastern to turn to ace, Amanda Smith for relief mid inning. Corban scored yet another unearned run in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-4.

The Navy and Gold caused a fourth error that allowed two runs to score in the top of the seventh stanza, and took a 6-5 lead. Gonzales shut down the Mountie offense after the second inning. Eastern didn't score again until the tied things up in the bottom of the seventh to take the game to extra innings.

Eastern applied pressure in the eighth, but Corban was able to fend off their attack until the 10th when series of singles allowed the winning run to come in for the home team.

Arase (3-4, HBP, 3 R) was tough to keep off the basepath at Peggy Anderson softball field. She was joined by Iosia (2-5, RBI, 2 R) and Karla Calderon (2-5, RBI) with multi-hit performances in the heart-breaking game one defeat.

After a tense and emotional game one, game two started in a more mellow fashion. Things were quiet through the third inning, but in the fourth frame Eastern knocked back-to-back homeruns, tallying the first two Mountie hits of the game. They plated another run, and held Corban scoreless throughout.

Alise Olson threw the majority of the contest giving up four hits in five innings before Sarah Parker went in to close in the sixth.

Arase and Calderon each added another hit to their impressive stats, and Sarah Bradshaw and Parker rounded out the Warrior's hitting with a single apiece.

Corban will return to action this coming Tuesday at Warrior Field in Salem, Ore. The Warriors will host Bushnell for a crucial conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
