No. 2 Yotes Sweep Doubleheader, Series against Corban Softball

WILSONVILLE, Ore. – The Corban University softball team was unable to corral the high-powered No. 2-ranked College of Idaho lineup on Sunday, falling in game three of the two squads' four-game series by an 11-3 (six innings) score, and dropping the non-conference series finale by a 15-4 tally.

"It was a tough weekend; there is always something to learn from this sport," said head coach Danyelle Huber. "I look forward to the Warriors getting back up and putting things together for the rest of the season."

Similar to game one yesterday, the Yote offense came out firing on all cylinders of Sunday's first contest. College of Idaho plated three runs to take an early advantage into the final Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) game of the series.

Corban responded with a rally in the bottom of the second, plating a pair of runs to draw within one. Nifty baserunning sparked the two-run stanza, as a double steal accounted for the squad's first score, and an RBI single to left from Reagan Davis brought in the second run.

A two-out, two-run double from C of I's Lindsay Jones in the next half inning helped the visitors get those runs back, but the resilient Warriors chipped away with another run—which came home via a wild pitch—in the bottom of the third.

The dynamic of the contest shifted in the top of the fourth, when the Yotes broke out for five runs. Four of those came with one swing of the bat, when Kaylee MacDannald blasted a grand slam over the left-field fence

An RBI groundout from Tanner Higgins pushed the Yote lead to eight in the top of the fifth, which rounded out the visitors' game-one scoring.

Annie Polster earned the victory in the circle for C of I, tossing all five innings and allowing five hits and three runs (two earned).

The Yotes also struck first in game two, bringing home a run in the top of the first courtesy of an RBI sac fly from Kaily Christensen.

Aggressive baserunning helped the Navy and Gold get that run back in the bottom of the second. The Warriors pulled even on a double steal, where Karla Calderon swiped second, and Meri McElligott took home on the throw from Coyote catcher Hallie Holland.

College of Idaho's Haley Loffer continued her otherworldly 2022 campaign with a two-out, game-tying two-run double for the Yotes in the top of the fourth, but Corban re-took the lead with a run in the bottom of the frame. California Johnson brought the run home, executing situational softball by plating Calderon with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field.

That helped Corban regain a 4-3 advantage, and that's where the score would stay until the sixth, when C of I plated seven runs to take a commanding 10-4 lead late in the ballgame.

The high-powered Yote bats tacked on five more in the following frame, eventually sealing their series sweep by a 15-4 final score in the non-conference finale.

Kaycee Arase (2-for-3, R) and Madison Wyllie (2-for-3, RBI) led the Navy and Gold offense in the defeat. In the circle, Alise Olsen was saddled with the loss, but the stat sheet could be somewhat misleading, as the Warrior starter competed valiantly throughout the first five innings before the challenging sixth and seventh innings.

Corban (8-12, 3-3 CCC) has a big week of road contests on tap, set to compete in five conference contests next week. The Warriors will face Interstate-5 rival Bushnell University twice on Tuesday (1 p.m./3 p.m.) before facing off against Warner Pacific University in a four-game set in Portland on Friday and Saturday.
