ASHLAND, Ore. – The Corban University softball team fell twice to the No. 10-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon University on Saturday. Walks and homeruns plagued the Warrior defense in game one, while SOU held Corban scoreless in game two, and scored nine of their own.
The Raiders scored first, but Logann Walker put Corban on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to left scoring Anastasia Iosia. The Warriors took the lead just two plays later when Morgan Gleeson singled through the right-side scoring both Paia'ala Wilcox-Molina and Cambria Kerze.
A walk to Maddie Ogles loaded the bases for veteran, Madison Wyllie. She delivered a bases-clearing double and Corban took a 6-2 lead. All six runs were unearned because of a Raider error that allowed Kerze to reach base.
Cayla Williams started in the circle once again for SOU, but Corban's six run inning in the fourth was enough for Jessica Pistol to turn to the Raider bullpen for relief. SOU got out of the inning without any further damage.
The home team answered back offensively with a three-run homer from Ashton Cathey and then another four run inside-the-park homerun from Sarah Kerling. The Raiders took a 9-6 lead after their offensive explosion and held Corban scoreless through the final frames.
The Navy and Gold struggled in game two and SOU scattered nine hits and plated nine runs. A couple of miscues from the visiting defense combined with Riley Donovan's (2 2B, HR, 6 RBI) offensive display and Katie Machado's stellar performance in the circle made for a quick game at University Field in Ashland. The 9-0 win was the Raiders' 17th consecutive victory.
Ogles (3 H) and Gleeson (2 H) had multi-hit performances this afternoon.
After today, Corban has secured the sixth and final spot in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament which is set to begin next Friday (May 6) in Klamath Falls.
