Corban Softball Falls to Eastern on Day One of the CCC Tournament

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Strikeouts loomed large in Corban University softball's game one loss to Eastern Oregon University on Friday. EOU's Amanda Smith sat down nine Corban batters by way of the K.

Small ball and timely hitting allowed the Mountaineers to get on the board first in the bottom of the first frame.

Despite several more offensive opportunities, no more scoring would happen until the top of the fourth when Maddie Ogles started things off with a double to left center.

Samantha Martinez, pinch running for Ogles, then swiped her 13th bag of the season putting the tying run on third for veteran Madison Wyllie. Wyllie's RBI groundout scored Martinez and tied the game in the fourth.

In the bottom half of that same inning, the Mountaineers found themselves in prime position to score, but an inning-ending double play by Kaycee Arase and the Warrior defense thwarted their opportunity.

Things were quiet for Corban from there on out, but in the bottom of the fifth the Mounties plated two more after a series of hits.

In the sixth frame, a miscue credited to Corban combined with several hits and wild pitches, led the home team on the scoreboard to continue to tack on five more runs, four of which were would go down as unearned.

Arase walked to start off the seventh, but was thrown out at second on the next play. Smith buckled down and struck out two more to take the contest, 8-1.

EOU tallied nine hits to Corban's two. Holly Gonzales went the distance for the Warriors, but the Mountie offense prevailed.

Ogles' double and Arase's triple were Corban's only hits on the day.

The Warriors will be back tomorrow morning to play the loser of College of Idaho and Oregon Tech in a loser eliminated contest. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m. at Stilwell Field in Klamath Falls.
