SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2022 regular-season slate on a high note on Saturday, cruising to a 24-2 victory over Multnomah University. That's the most goals the team has ever scored in a game.
Prior to the contest, the Warriors recognized their lone senior from the class of 2022, Joanna Wattimena, who also happens to be the program's first-ever commit.
"Today was such a fun day for a senior game," said head coach Kylie McMinn. "Even with tough, athletic opponents, we had goals scored by both of our players that are moving on to new seasons in their lives. Our chemistry has peaked with this game, setting us up for a great start in the fall as a growing program that's building momentum. We had some future commits and prospects able to join us on the sideline, representing the future of the team."
Josie Brence got the Warriors started quickly, earning a brace in less than three minutes to help Corban strike for a pair of early goals. From there on out, the hometown team was off to the races, taking a commanding 10-1 lead into the second quarter.
Four different Warriors found the back of the net in a six-goal second stanza, where Corban expanded its lead to 14 by the midway mark. As impressive as the offense was, the Warrior defense was equally incredible in the second half, blanking the Lions as the squad cruised to a 22-goal win.
That defense was led by Payton Nuse, who collected a pair of saves in net. The senior Wattimena has been a staple of the Navy and Gold defense in each of the past two seasons, and she capped off the Senior-Day celebration with her first career goal halfway through the fourth quarter.
Brence and Sydney Davis each finished the rout with six goals apiece to lead the way offensively, while Geneen Impreso and Sarah Whitbey added hat tricks in the victory. Both Meredith Pinkerton and Devyn Davis registered braces in the win, and Kimberly Schott and Wattimena rounded out Corban's season-high 24-goal output with their first-career tallies.
Corban's season comes to a close with a 4-2 record in counting contests this spring, with the program's upward trajectory continuing with the exciting 2022 campaign.
"All in all, God has honored our efforts to honor Him this season," McMinn reflected. "I am simultaneously humbled and proud of the path we are on and I am excited to see how God develops us in the future."
