SALEM, Ore. – The No. 5 Corban University Women's Volleyball team (11-2, 4-1) rolled through the conference competition for the second consecutive night, downing the Warner Pacific University Knights (0-4, 0-4) in straight sets, 25-11, 25-11, and 25-15 at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center earlier this evening.
Warriors' Head Coach Kim McLain said following tonight's contest, "It was another all-around team effort tonight. I'm proud of the team and the work they are putting in, and it truly shows on the court."
A full team effort indeed is what Warrior fans witnessed Saturday evening, as Corban didn't have a single student-athlete reach double-digits in either kills or digs, but had five different scorers reach six plus kills, and seven different defenders record multiple digs.
A 0.050 attacking percentage from the Knights also resulted in less opportunities for the Warriors offense and defense to shine, as Warner Pacific's 20-16 kill/error margin provided Corban with lengthy leads throughout the night.
The Knights did start off the evening with multiple chances to put the Warriors in between a rock and a hard place, as they scored the initial point of set number one and evened the scoring at three points before the Corban offense began to cook.
After four points in a row broken up by a Warner Pacific kill, the Warriors would go on to score the next 13 points, their longest such streak of the season, as freshman setter Abby Guindy served up a pair of service aces and the team received six kills from three different attackers.
Following the largest run of the year for Corban, which resulted in a 25-11 set win, the Warriors began the second set with an eight-point run before a kill from WPU opposite hitter Tevlin Britten disrupted the pace. Try as the Knights could, the Warriors early lead resulted in another 25-11 set final score in favor of the Navy and Gold.
The third set featured multiple Warrior runs offensively once again, with Guindy leading the charge at the service line for another ace in a seven-point Corban run. The Knights managed to rally late in the set to turn a 3-16 deficit into 14-21 score, the closest they had been this far into a set all night long, but a kill from freshman opposite hitter Makayla Roginski and two kills plus a block from freshman outside hitter Kylie Davey shut down the WPU comeback bid at 25-15.
The Warriors matched the intensity from last night's three-set sweep to sweep once again, this time with a respectable .376 attacking percentage on 34 total team assists. The Knights nearly tied Corban in blocks (4-6), but an overwhelming margin of error in kills, service aces, and digs resulted in the fourth loss of the season for WPU.
Sophomore outside hitter Rylee Troutman provided some of the most offensive and defensive of the night by any one player, tying Roginski with nine kills for the game-high without a single error, while earning nine digs for the game-high designation as well.
In just another night at the office, senior setter Jadyn Mullen earned the game-high in assists with 20 on the evening, while Guindy dealt out 11 dimes herself during her rotations.
Knights' setter Kyla Reiling earned all but one of the team's assists with 18 this evening, while middle blocker Elizabeth Reid, the twin sister of Warriors' middle blocker Allyson Reid, smacked a team-high eight kills with just one error for a .350 attacking percentage. She also tied libero Rose Vasquez with seven digs in the backcourt for the most consistent gameplay of the night for WPU.
The Warriors will hit the road this next weekend for a pair of tough road conference matchups, as they will travel to Klamath Falls, Ore. to face the Oregon Tech Owls on Friday night at 7pm PDT, before battling the No. 22 Southern Oregon University Raiders on Saturday night at the same start time.
