Defense Continues to Shine for No. 21 Corban Men’s Soccer, Warriors Push Shutout Streak to Eight Against Eastern Oregon

SALEM, Ore. – The stout defense of the Corban University Men's Soccer team (8-0-0, 3-0-0) continues to highlight not only the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC), but also nab the attention of the entire NAIA, as the Warriors' 3-0 win over Eastern Oregon University (4-3-1, 1-2-0) earns them their eighth straight shutout to begin the season.

Warriors' Head Coach Tim Kagey was brief in his thoughts on tonight's victory by sharing, "Great team win today. We had some great moments that we could dwell on, but our focus turns to tomorrow's contest with College of Idaho."

With a goal finally being scored against Viterbo University earlier this week, the Corban Men's Soccer team now becomes one of only two teams in the NAIA to not allow a goal this season, with a clear game count advantage (8-3) over the only other NAIA school to hold their opponents scoreless, the St. Thomas University Bobcats.

After earning his first goal of the 2022 season in last Sunday's 8-0 win over Walla Walla University, redshirt junior Nate Sherwood found himself right in the middle of the first two goals scored against the Mountaineers this afternoon.

In the 25th minute, Sherwood and sophomore midfielder/forward Andres Labate played a pair of passes beautifully to a wide-open Warrior in the middle of the goal box, as sophomore defender Edson Jimenez put the ball into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Sherwood would score the second goal of the game and of his season for the Warriors just one minute and 21 seconds later, with senior midfielder Reggie Reyes connecting with the 5'8 Sacramento native for an easy score.

Labate earned his team-leading sixth goal of the season later in the first half, finding the back of the net on an incredible long-range snipe from just outside the penalty box, giving the Warriors a sizeable 3-0 lead over the Mounties.

Eastern Oregon was able to lock down Corban defensively in the second half, allowing just five shots by the Warriors in the final 45 minutes to keep the final score at three goals to nil.

Corban' graduate student goalkeeper Quinn McCallion (8-0-0) logged his eighth straight shutout, this time requiring just a single save to earn the clean slate. EOU goalkeeper Dalton Mauzay (3-3-0) secured eight saves this afternoon but allowed three goals for his third loss on the season.

Jimenez and sophomore midfielder Alexis Luna led the Warriors offensive opportunities each with three shots and two coming on goal. Sherwood and Labate each finish with a goal and assist apiece, while Jimenez earns the third goal and Reyes the third assist.

The Mountaineers saw two team shots earlier today, with their lone shot on goal coming off the foot of defender Faris Ceranic.

The No. 21 Warriors are back at the Outdoor Athletic Complex (OAC) for their final home game in the next three-week span, hosting the College of Idaho Yotes (4-2-1, 2-1-0) at 3pm PDT tomorrow afternoon following the conclusion of the women's soccer match.
