No. 25 Warriors Douse Flames for Fifth Straight Win and Shutout

SALEM, Ore. – The offense was on full display Thursday evening at the Outdoor Athletic Complex, as the Corban University Men's Soccer team (5-0, 0-0) flew past the visiting Flames of Bethesda University of California (0-4-1, 0-0-0) by scoring nine goals in 90 minutes, six of which came in the second half alone.

"It was great to see different players get in on the scoring today," Corban Head Coach Tim Kagey said on his team's performance today.

"We are looking forward to our first conference games next weekend, and our full focus is on the next game now," Kagey concluded.

Corban concluded their final non-conference contest of the 2022 season in teamwork style offense, with six different players scoring goals in the Warriors' rout of the Flames.

The offensive showcase didn't kick off until nearly halftime for Corban, as a handball in the penalty box in the 39th minute by the Flames resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for the Warriors. Freshman forward Jaden Dubon was tabbed to take the shot, who scored with ease for the first goal of his collegiate career.

In the span of the remaining six minutes before halftime, Corban managed to find the back of the net on two more occasions, the first coming on a one-on-one opportunity for junior midfielder Gian Gargurevich, who juked his defender to rope a shot left-to-right in the penalty box, and into the back of the net.

Sophomore midfielder Alexis Luna scored his fourth goal of the season with 1:06 remaining on the clock in the first half, scoring off a quick free kick set from the foot of senior midfielder Jose Peralta, crushing his shot into the netting.

In typical Warrior fashion, Luna returned the favor to begin the second half, finding senior forward Reggie Reyes in front of the net to make this a 4-0 contest in favor of Corban.

After an accidental own goal from the Flames off a cross that was meant to be cleared, Reyes scored his fourth goal of the season, and second of the contest for a brace, creating his own opportunity from a long ball that he worked all the way to the net himself.

Sophomore midfielder/forward Andres Labate couldn't go another game without adding to his goal count, as an assist from senior midfielder Saad Mohacht gave Labate the opportunity for his fourth goal in his past five games, tying Reyes and Luna for the team-lead, and placing all three Warriors in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Top 10 in the category.

Dubon picked up his second goal of the season for a brace in the 85th minute, and fan favorite senior midfielder Yuki Onishi scored the final goal of the game for Corban just a minute and 10 second later, with an assist on the play by senior defender Robin Terry.

A dominating offensive performance came through in the team stats as well, with Corban outshooting Bethesda 24-1, with a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Warriors also secured 11 more corner kicks than the Flames (13-2).

Warriors' graduate student goalkeeper Quinn McCallion (5-0) earned his CCC leading fifth shutout, improving his record by needing just one save thanks to the consistent support from his defensive line. Flames' starting goalkeeper took the loss to drop to 0-4 on the season, allowing three goals and scooping up a pair of saves, before goalkeeper Gabriel Andrade Mane checked in to start the second half for Bethesda, allowing six goals and hauling in three saves.

The Warriors conclude their non-conference slate at 5-0, securing all shutout victories to prepare them for the rigorous CCC conference slate that begins next Friday, September 16th, at the OAC. Corban will host Carroll College (1-1-1, 0-0-0) at 7pm PDT for both team's CCC kickoff contest.
