SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Women's Soccer team (4-0, 0-0) posted yet another shutout at the Outdoor Athletic Complex (OAC) earlier this afternoon, as a lone goal is all that separated the Warriors and San Diego Christian College Hawks (1-1-1, 0-0) in a 1-0 shutout for Corban.
"I'm proud of the team for earning another win and shutout," Warriors' Head Coach Whitney Pitalo said this afternoon following the result at the OAC.
"We accomplished most of our game goals today: maintaining possessions, scoring off a corner, and improving on our final third passing. The contributions of those that entered the match were fantastic. We're looking forward to our final non-conference match at home versus Vanguard this weekend!" Pitalo went on to share.
The Warriors posted their third straight shutout Thursday afternoon, denying every opportunity the Hawks could muster the entirety of the contest.
Both Corban and SDCC found multiple looks in the first half, but other than a pair of back-to-back yellow cards for the Hawks, there was little action that prompted either team to worry about who was leaving with a win at the end of the 90 minutes of regulation.
Finally, in the 75th minute, junior defender Jamine Biava provided the momentum the Warriors needed to take the first and only lead of the afternoon, as she flipped a perfectly placed corner kick from junior forward Fatima Jimenez off her head, and into the back of the Hawks' goal.
Some more stout defense from both sides rode this contest to its completion, and thus the Warriors to their new and improved 4-0 record.
As a team, the Warriors led the Hawks in total shots (7-4), but all four of the Hawks shots were on goal, which tied both teams in the category. Corban rode a substantial 7-2 corner kick advantage to the only score of the game, and SDCC's 8-4 foul ratio hurt them more than it provided positive outcomes in the end.
Warriors' junior goalkeeper Makida Herbert turns in her third perfect slate of the year, snagging four saves batting away every crossing opportunity that came her way. Hawks' goalkeeper Anjolie Colon started in her first contest of the year, almost walking away with her first win as well before allowing the late goal to Biava, picking up three saves along the way.
Biava now leads the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) in game winning goals (2), and ranks third in total goals scored (3). Herbert sits atop the CCC in shutouts (3), and pulls home third place rankings in both save percentage (.895) and goals against average (0.50).
Corban Women's Soccer will return to the OAC for their final non-conference tune-up of the season, as they host the Lions of Vanguard University (2-1-2, 0-0-0) at 11am PDT to kick off the opening week of CCC play.
