Second Quarter Surge Propels No. 16 Mountaineers Past Warrior Women’s Basketball

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Women's Basketball team (8-8, 5-5) struggled to contain the No. 16 Eastern Oregon University (14-2, 9-1) on Tim Hills Court earlier this evening, falling to the Mountaineers 85-53 following a massive second quarter swing.

The Warriors were able to lockdown the Mounties early, allowing just 14 first quarter points and leading EOU 15-14 at the midway point of the first half. From there, it was all Eastern Oregon, as Corban was outscored 32-7 in the second quarter to go from holding a narrow lead, to falling behind 20+ points at the hands of the visiting squad.

EOU converted on 56% of their second quarter attempts, while the Navy and Gold grew colder by the minute, scoring on just three field goals. The Warriors shot zero free throws in the first half, committed the same number of turnovers as the Mounties, yet still trailed in nearly every offensive category.

Corban' senior forward Holly Golenor scored eight of her eventual team-high in points in the first quarter alone, leading the squad at the halftime break. Meanwhile, forward Shaelie Burgess led the way for the Mountaineers en route to their fourteenth win of the season, coincidentally with 14 first half points.

While the Corban offense finally found some momentum in the third quarter, Eastern Oregon continued to shoot the ball effectively to keep the Warriors far at bay. Another quarter of hitting more than half of their shot attempts resulted in their lead to grow to 70-34 after three quarters of play, with their reserves taking the court to begin the fourth quarter of action.

The Warriors managed end the contest by winning the fourth quarter 19-15, but the damage had already been done to send the Navy and Gold to their third-straight loss.

Despite being outshot by the Mounties by only seven percent, the game was won and lost in the paint, as Eastern Oregon nabbed offensive rebounds at an incredibly high rate, granting their offense 23 second chances compared to the Warriors' five.

Golenor ended her evening with a team-high 12 points, adding four rebounds along the way. Junior guard Maddie Godwin notched her eighth game of the season with double-digit points (11), while junior guard Kirsten Koehnke tallied six points, four rebounds and three assists in the Warriors' efforts.

Burgess earned a game-high 15 points with ease in the paint and at the free throw line, adding nine rebounds to fall just one shy of a double-double. EOU guard Beverly Slater notched nine points on her way to a game-high 13 rebounds in just 21 minutes played. Guard Halle Wright pitched in 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Corban Women's Basketball returns to the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center tomorrow afternoon, as they'll look to break a conference record tie with the College of Idaho Yotes (10-6, 5-5) at 3pm PST. You can purchase tickets ahead of time by clicking HERE and selecting your game of choice.
