Consistency Pays Off for Saints as Offensive Pressure Leads to Warriors’ First Conference Loss

SALEM, Ore. – A match featuring just a single goal was surprisingly filled with an incredible amount of offensive intensity throughout the match, though it highly favored the road team as the Corban University Women's Soccer team dropped their first Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contest of the 2023 regular season to an undefeated Carroll College squad. The Saints took fifteen more shots in the contest than the Warriors, including thirteen more shots on goal.

"Today was a mental and physical fight for our ladies for sure," Corban head coach Travez Whyte shared earlier this evening. "We are learning that this conference requires us to be sharp for both game days, not just one. We will continue to improve and learn from games like these. We are on the right track!"

It was only a matter of time before the Saints (7-0-2, 4-0-1) finally broke through the Warriors' defensive wall, as Corban (4-3-4, 2-1-2) played defensively minded for a large majority of the game, failing to turn possessions into opportunities on their own offensive side of the field on a handful of occasions. With nine shot attempts in both the first and second halves, Carroll needed only find the perfect moment to strike, and did so with nearly thirteen minutes remaining.

After a costly turnover in the Warriors' backfield, defender Natalie Brown carried the ball towards the top of the penalty box and let a shot rip from roughly 20 yards out, just skimming over the fingertips of Corban's freshman goalkeeper Ava Hayes and breaking the scoreless tie with time quickly fleeting.

However, the Navy and Gold's offense just couldn't find the spark they needed in order to stay out of the loss column for the first time in conference play and snaps their eight-game streak without a loss. Forward Emily Funseth led all players with four shots this afternoon, while Warriors' sophomore forward Carley Diaz had the team's lone shot on goal.

Another pair of CCC contests on their home field await the Warriors next weekend, beginning with Northwest University (5-4-1, 3-1-1) on Friday, October 6th at 7pm PT.
