First Half Efforts Not Enough as Mounties Storm Back Against Warriors

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Corban University Women's Soccer team couldn't push a strong first half performance into a victory earlier tonight at Community Stadium, as the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers were able to fight back after facing an early deficit to take the match 2-1 on their final home game of the season.

Corban head coach Travez Whyte shared, "Both games this weekend provided lots of learning and growing moments for us. We also showed moments of great soccer as well, and we are so grateful to God for everything he provides for us. Huge thanks again to all of our traveling Warriors for your support! Hope to see you all in Montana next weekend!"

It was the defense core of the Warriors (8-5-4, 6-3-2) who scored with less than ten minutes remaining in the first half to provide the road team with an early lead, as junior defender Josie Brence took a free kick opportunity near the midway line into Eastern Oregon's penalty box, where junior defender Emilly Olvera scored her first career goal on a rebound off the crossbar.

Corban's 1-0 halftime lead wouldn't stand to last long on the Mountaineers' Senior Day, as midfielder Lindsay Balkenbush received a cross by defender Sydney Peck and punched it into the back left corner of the net, knotting this contest just two minutes into the second half.

Seven minutes later, Peck scored her own goal to break the tie in the 54th minute, with an assist being credited to midfielder Brooke Snyder. Despite outshooting the Mounties (7-3-4, 5-3-2) by six shots on the evening (14-8), the Warriors were unable to locate the back of the net for the remainder of the contest, resulting in the first winless weekend of the conference slate for the Navy and Gold.

Brence led the entire playing field in shots taken today with a career-high five shots, two of which came on goal for the Middleton, Idaho native. Warriors' freshman goalkeeper Ava Hayes accepted the first loss of her young collegiate career after allowing two goals with a trio of saves, while Mounties' goalkeeper Rylee Schei picked up the victory by matching Hayes with another three saves.

The Warriors will get an extended break before their final conference matchup on October 29th, as they'll make the cross-country trek to Billings, Montana to face off with Rocky Mountain College (2-9-1, 1-7-1) in their last opportunity to move up the conference standings prior to the beginning of postseason play.
