PORTLAND, Ore. – It took about nine minutes for the Corban University Men's Basketball team to find their footing tonight in their Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) opener against the Multnomah Lions, as the Warriors would take the lead with 10:39 remaining in the first half and never relinquished it for the remainder of the evening in an 88-66 road victory.
"Our guys came out and competed and executed our game plan to perfection," Corban head coach Taylor Kelly stated shortly after the impressive road win to start their conference slate. "We've really focused our attention on being the most competitive team we can be on a daily basis. I believe that commitment showed through tonight. We had some guys play physically tough and I love how our guys committed to rebounding the basketball."
After neither team could find the bottom of the basket through the first two minutes of play, the Lions (4-2, 1-1) finally managed to break the scoreless droughts on their home court and put the Warriors (3-2, 1-0) on notice of the new and improved Multnomah lineup, having only lost a neutral site matchup during the non-conference slate and were previously undefeated at home to start the year.
However, Corban junior guard Aundree Polk had other plans for his return to his hometown, as the Portland native came off the bench and needed just 11 first half minutes to flip the scoreboard on the Lions and drop a game-high 24 points without even having to step on the court for the second half. Polk finished his night shooting 76% from the field and hit the locker rooms early seeing as his teammates were able to fend Multnomah off with ease throughout the second half despite playing on the road.
Try as the Lions might, their slight runs throughout the first ten minutes of the second half were quickly squandered by the Warriors, with the Corban lead extending to as many as 25 points with five minutes remaining and eventually settling for the 22-point rout to open their conference schedule.
Senior guard Taylor Anderson added 18 points in 31 minutes of action for Coach Kelly and the program at Jim Skagen Court this evening, adding three rebounds and two assists along the way. Fellow senior guard Collin Warmouth followed right behind with ten points in the starting lineup and was the closest Warrior to double-double territory with eight boards.
Multnomah big man Tyrese Taylor secured the only double-double of the game for either team with 17 points and gobbled up ten boards before fouling out, while guard Kadeem Nelson scored a team-high 18 points off the bench. Guard Taylor Pomeroy matched Taylor with 17 points by converting on 50% of his field goals.
CCC action will continue tomorrow evening for the Warriors, as they'll make the return trip to Portland and head to C.C. Perry Gym for a conference battle with Warner Pacific University (2-5, 0-2) at 5pm PT.
