PORTLAND, Ore. – Forcing seven free throw attempts and converting on only 15 field goals all night wasn't nearly enough for the Corban University Women's Basketball team to leave Portland with the weekend sweep this afternoon, as the Warriors fell 58-37 at C.C. Perry Gym to the Warner Pacific University Knights, who remained perfect thus far in conference play.
"Warner Pacific did a good job of keeping us out of rhythm offensively and we just could never get any momentum going tonight," Corban head coach Bill Pilgeram explained. "We will learn from tonight getting back to work this week and are looking forward to finally being at home next Friday against Bushnell."
Senior guard Maddie Godwin was the focal point of the Warriors' offense through a low-scoring first half, where the teams combined for 40 total points and saw Warner Pacific (4-1, 3-0) with a slight two-point advantage at 21-19. Godwin scored 11 first half points to own over half of Corban's scoring plays all on her own.
However, Godwin was held to just three points in another offensive drought for the Warriors (2-5, 1-1) throughout the second half that resulted in a 58-37 road loss to end the opening weekend of conference play. While the defense certainly showed up from time to time all night long, shooting less than 25% from the floor for the contest certainly isn't what the Navy and Gold had drawn up from the start.
Freshman guard Autumn Agnew added eight points off the bench with four of the Warriors' five free throws made in the game, while junior forward Madison Hodnett secured six points and four rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Warner Pacific had three near double-double performances, first from a pair of guards as McKeeley Tonkin was the leading scorer tonight with 18 points and eight rebounds, followed closely behind by Teirra Hicks who scored 12 points and another eight boards. Forward Emily Brown pitched in 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Warriors will host a conference game for the first time this season next Friday at 5:30pm, as they'll welcome I-5 rival Bushnell University (5-3, 1-1) for the first of two head-to-head matchups.
