Corban Softball Suffers Back-to-Back Shutouts by No. 5 Southern Oregon

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Corban University Softball team (7-23, 5-14) is still struggling to find the offensive identity of this roster as they opened a four-game series with No. 5-ranked Southern Oregon University (22-6, 12-3) and dropped both contests in shutout fashion, 10-0 and 15-0 in five inning run-rule games.

"I felt like our pitchers overall did well today," Warriors' Head Coach Danyelle Huber said shortly after the conclusion of the second game. "Now we just need hits strung together and defense to be more consistent if we're going to give ourselves a chance down the stretch of games."

Game 1 – SOU 10, Corban 0 (5 Innings)

The Raiders took advantage of their home field right out of the gate against Corban freshman starting pitcher Vanesa Hulett-Quinones, scoring five runs on four hits in the top of the first inning alone. Only two of those runs crossed as earned due to an error, resulting in a 5-0 lead for SOU entering Corban's offensive half.

Southern Oregon added another run in the top of the second thanks to a leadoff single by Raiders' second baseman Deja Acosta and RBI single with two outs by starting pitcher Cayla Williams, giving herself a cushy 6-0 lead in just an inning and a half played thus far.

Despite recording their first hit in the bottom of the second, the Warriors were unable to make the move of it and instead surrendered more runs in the top of the third inning, as the Raiders continued to pile on the hits and score runs at will, leading to a 10-0 deficit after 3.0 innings of play.

Corban finally threatened with a runner at third base in the bottom of the fourth inning but couldn't drive her home as a line drive to centerfield ended the inning with a runner in scoring position. A quick one-two-three inning in the top and bottom of the fifth inning for both squads led to a run-rule victory for SOU in game one.

Hulett-Quinones took her eighth loss on the year by allowing ten runs on 12 hits, seven of which were earned and walked one batter.

Williams reached double-digit wins on the season via a two-hit shutout of the Warriors, striking out three batters and walking a solo Corban student-athlete.

Junior first baseman Sarah Bradshaw and freshman left fielder Josie Landis were responsible for the lone singles by the Corban offense in game one.

Leadoff batter Acosta struck a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for SOU, scoring two runs and adding an RBI in the process. Three more Raiders secured multi-hit afternoons in the first game of the series, all of which also scored a run tacked on a single RBI coincidentally.

Game 2 – SOU 15, Corban 0 (5 Innings)

After going 0-for-3 in game one, designated player Riley Donovan struck in the top of the first inning with a two-run homer for her first hit of the day, leading to another big opening for the Raiders that finally ended with another 5-0 advantage for SOU on the scoreboard.

The No. 5-ranked offense continued to pile on the runs in the top of the second, exposing the opportunities with hits and forced errors left and right to score five more runs and double their lead to 10-0.

Three more runs came across the plate for the Raiders in the top of the third in exchange for outs, as two bases-loaded groundouts and a single up the middle provided Southern Oregon with a 13-0 advantage and weren't looking at slowing down.

One more run in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings would cap off another shutout for SOU, taking game two by a final score of 15-0.

Warriors' junior starting pitcher Alise Olson was tagged for ten runs on nine hits, surrendering seven earned runs and walking two batters in 2.0 innings. Freshman relief pitcher Amy Jankowski pitched the final 3.0 innings and allowed five more runs off seven hits, walking four hitters along the way.

Raiders' starting pitcher Katie Machado achieved her 10th win on the year by allowing only three hits to Corban batters, striking out a game-high eight hitters as well.

Corban second baseman Samantha Martinez secured two of the three team hits for the Navy and Gold in game two, while sophomore center fielder Jody Fischer slapped another base hit in the bottom of the third frame.

Southern Oregon left fielder Faith Moultrie swung the heavy bat in the back half of today's doubleheader, smashing three hits and scoring a run on every baserunning opportunity. Donovan's two hits, three runs scored, and three RBI assisted Moultrie in just two at-bats, while three more batters secured at least two hits and two RBI.

The Warriors and Raiders will continue their series tomorrow at 11am PDT, looking to close out their four-game slate before the weekend begins.
