SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Men's Soccer team played 85 minutes of shutout soccer against the Carroll College Saints, but unfortunately allowed a late goal and had to settle for a 1-1 stalemate at the Outdoor Athletic Complex earlier this afternoon.
"Today's performance came down to group buy-in mentality and a relentless work ethic," Warriors' head coach Corbin Bowers stated. "We responded well to adversity and were defensively solid for most of the match. Unfortunate to lose focus late in the game and allow them to equalize, but overall, a valuable point in a difficult conference."
The Warriors (1-4-4, 1-2-2) struck first once again in their second of six-straight home matches, as redshirt sophomore midfielder Elijah Gish scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 39th minute, thanks to an assist from freshman forward Maximus Yermachenkov. A deep free kick opportunity took a single hop before Yermachenkov poked the ball in the direction of Gish, who misdirected the ball to freeze the Saints' goalkeeper and easily score the opening goal of the contest.
However, consistent offensive pressure from Carroll (4-2-2, 4-1-1) throughout the match would eventually result in the equalizer being scored with nearly three minutes remaining in the game. A free kick opportunity just outside of the penalty box was a perfect opportunity for the Saints to try a set piece with a runner crossing in front of the goalkeeper, who nearly scored off the rip but was saved by Warriors' redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Isaac Pureco. However, with Pureco only able to bat away the save and not haul it in, Carroll forward Luke Rosenberger collected the rebound opportunity and easily buried his shot into the net for the Saints to escape with a draw after trailing for over half of the match.
Carroll held a massive advantage throughout the game in offensive opportunities, taking five more shots than the Warriors (12-7) and seven more shots on goal. Corban's lone shot on goal was the shot Gish provided to break the 0-0 tie originally. Rosenberger led all players in shots this afternoon with a trio of chances.
Corban men's soccer will continue their home stand into next weekend, as they're scheduled to host the Eagles of Northwest University (4-2-3, 1-1-3) at 4:30pm PT on Friday, October 6th.
