SALEM, Ore. – Dominating the boards from start to finish, the Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers handed the Corban University Warriors their second-straight home loss in an 87-55 final score this afternoon amid the biggest snowstorm of the season in the Willamette Valley.
"Once again, a poor start got us in a hole that we couldn't dig out of," Corban head coach Bill Pilgeram explained. "EOU was able to hit some open shots and got far too many second chance points in the first half. It was good to see some positives in the second half with assists, better rebounding, and overall execution."
Nearly doubling up the Warriors (5-10, 4-5) in rebounds this afternoon and falling just three offensive rebounds shy of tying in total rebounds overall was the Mountaineers (10-4, 6-4), who hit back-to-back three-pointers on their opening possessions and took control from that point on. In just the first half alone, EOU guard Beverly Slater had already wrangled 13 rebounds in what was an impressive outing for the senior from Boise, Idaho.
Thanks to 18 offensive boards, the Mountaineers scored 21 second chance points on the evening and 38 total in the paint, as they established their posts players in the exact right spots on nearly every possession, while the Warriors' offense found their success in points scored off Eastern Oregon turnovers with a 27-18 advantage.
Freshman guard Teayona Hoard was the offensive highlight for Warrior Nation today, scoring a career-high 15 points on 5-for-7 field goals, adding five rebounds and a pair of steals along the way. Fellow freshman guards Autumn Agnew and Lizzy Bennett combined for 16 points with four rebounds apiece, while junior forward Madison Hodnett tacked on another six points and five boards.
Slater finished with 16 rebounds in just 26 minutes of action, falling a single point shy of a double-double with a game-high six assists as well. Forward Brie Holecek was the leading scorer for both programs with 16 points and dealt out five assists, combining with three more Mounties who were in double-figures for the major road win.
With their four-game homestand in the rearview mirror, the Warriors turn their attention to a literal southern Oregon road trip, as they'll head to Ashland for a 5:30pm tipoff at No. 20-ranked Southern Oregon University next Friday, January 19th.
