Navy and Gold Held in Check by No. 20 Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – In their second-straight road matchup with an NAIA Top 25 ranked team, the Corban University Women's Basketball team couldn't find enough momentum to keep the No. 20-ranked Owls of Oregon Tech from their tenth conference win of the season via an 88-69 final score. Corban ends the first half of the conference slate with a 4-7 record and sits in a three-way tie for seventh place overall.

"We did a lot of good things tonight and I thought the team competed very hard," head coach Bill Pilgeram stated after his team's weekend finale. "We got within striking distance multiple times in the second half, but OIT seemed to always have an answer, which is why they are a ranked team in the NAIA."

The Warriors (5-12, 4-7) capped their southern Oregon road trip with a much better first half performance, as the offense stayed calm throughout the opening 20 minutes and saw Coach Pilgeram's play-calling find pay dirt on multiple occasions. However, after a three-point barrage sent the Navy and Gold to the loss column last night in Ashland, it was the plays in the paint that forced Corban into an early deficit.

The No. 20-ranked Owls (16-1, 10-1) have only a single loss on the season for a reason, as their own offense is built around sharing the ball around the court, which they were able to succeed in doing to build a 44-26 halftime lead. The Warriors refused to completely go away in the first two periods, and even a last second steal and heave at the horn by Oregon Tech nearly turned an 18-point lead for OIT into 21 points, as guard Olivia Sprague picked off a backcourt pass and tossed up a shot at the buzzer that found the bottom of the basket, but was waved off after further discussion from the officials.

The dynamic guard play from senior Maddie Godwin and freshman Autumn Agnew prevented the Owls from running away on their home court and eventually resulted in the sub-20 point loss on the road against a nationally ranked opponent, 88-69. The team's 69 points today represents the highest for a single game in the program's last five outings, providing them with an offensive spark as they head into the second half of the conference schedule.

Godwin and Agnew led the Warriors in scoring with 20 and 15 points, respectively, with Godwin adding four assists, three rebounds, and a pair of steals in 24 minutes played. Eight of the remaining student-athletes to take the court for Coach Pilgeram's staff this afternoon converted on at least one field goal attempt and spread the remaining team statistics out as evenly as possible.

Sprague narrowly edged Godwin for the game-high scoring mark with 22 points in front of her home fans, while guard Gabbie Gascon added 19 points and a game-high five assists. The remaining Owls to hit the hardwood all performed equally as well, just like the Navy and Gold reserves.

The Warriors' mini road trip will continue into next Tuesday with their second matchup of the season against travel partner Bushnell University (9-8, 5-6), as the Beacons will host a 5:30pm tipoff at the Morse Center in Eugene.
