MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – An undefeated NCAA DIII Linfield University Wildcat program hit over half of their field goal attempts for the contest to down the Corban University Women's Basketball team for the second year in a row and hand the Warriors their fourth-straight loss as non-conference play comes to an end this upcoming weekend. The Wildcats (6-0) shot lights out against the Navy and Gold (1-4) to secure a 73-53 victory in Linfield's home opener for the 2024-25 season.
Corban was able to keep the matchup within striking distance over the opening quarters, and even held a 17-14 lead following the first period thanks to a 47% field goal percentage and holding the Wildcats to just 37%. However, Linfield flipped the scoreboard in their favor with a significantly better conversion rate on their offensive half of the court, while they restricted the Warriors' offense to just three total field goals in the second quarter which allowed them to hold a seven-point halftime lead.
The Wildcats quickly established a double-digit lead to open the third quarter and never looked back in their 20-point victory, as they finally converted on their first three-point field goal of the evening in the third and rode the momentum to hitting five of their next six attempts to end the game throughout the fourth. Linfield ended the contest shooting over 51% on the day after shaking off their inconsistent opening quarter.
A mere 36% shooting for the entirety of the second half for Corban resulted in their lowest offensive output of the season thus far, as they'll be looking forward to getting back on their home court this upcoming weekend where they average over 73 points per game.
Senior guard Alyssa Wyllie led all scorers with 15 points off the bench for Warriors' head coach Kyllie Frizell, representing the only Warrior to shoot over 50% from the field with multiple attempts. Redshirt junior guard Tori Younker was right behind Wyllie with 13 points and a pair of steals, while senior guard Gemma LaVergne pitched in seven points and dealt out a team-best two assists.
Led by four starters in double-figure scoring, Linfield has now won back-to-back matchups with Corban for the first time in program history, as guard Eve Burke dropped 14 points and hauled in five boards, while guard Miki Vermeulen dished out a game-high five assists and added ten points. Guard Amelia Solt and forward Gillyan Landis added 13 and 11 points, respectively, with Landis also hauling in a game-best seven rebounds.
Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the Warriors will be back on Tim Hills Court for the first time in over three weeks as they host NCAA DIII Lewis & Clark College (1-4) on Saturday, November 30th at 2pm.
