OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Corban University Women's Basketball team couldn't overcome the nearly complete game from The Evergreen State College's starting five at the Constantino Recreation Center earlier this evening, as the Geoducks needed only three points from their bench to secure a 66-54 victory over the Warriors.
"Winning on the road is always tough in the CCC," Corban head coach Bill Pilgeram stated. "We played well and did a lot of good things for three quarters tonight, but just couldn't find consistent offense in the second quarter which came back to hurt us in the final score. Tomorrow night is another big chance for us to get a road win and help position ourselves within the conference."
A nearly 12% difference in field goal percentage in favor of the Geoducks (6-11, 6-9) was the difference in tonight's loss for the Warriors (7-14, 6-9), doing nearly everything else they needed in order to earn a road victory but were unable to find the result they wanted. After a down-to-the-wire finish on Tim Hills Court at the start of January between these two teams, Coach Pilgeram and his staff knew this result once again wouldn't come easily.
Not only did their bench outscore Evergeen State's by 17 points, Corban also out-rebounded and had just as many turnovers as the Geoducks did on the day. Offensive efficiency, specifically in an 0-for-14 shooting performance in the second quarter, ultimately cost the Warriors a potential huge win for their playoff aspirations.
The Warriors were led in scoring by senior guard Maddie Godwin and her 18 points combined with three steals, while sophomore forward Sevennah Van De Riet has found her footing both offensively and defensively as of late and nearly clinched her first career double-double via an 11-point and seven-rebound performance off the bench.
Evergreen State's starting lineup was responsible for 63 of the 66 total team points scored tonight by the home squad, led by guard Sydney Vanness who tied Godwin's game-high 18 points and added 14 rebounds for the contest's only double-double. Guards Thuyvi Tran, Allsion Deberry, and Jalyn Sackrider all pitched in 12 points apiece, with Deberry dealing out a game-high eight assists along the way.
The Eagles of Northwest University (5-16, 5-10) await the Warriors tomorrow afternoon up the road in Kirkland, with a 3pm start time scheduled for their conference rematch.
