KEIZER, Ore. – On a beautiful sunny day in Oregon, the visitors from the south put together a masterpiece of hitting and pitching to take the first two games of a four-game series. The Warriors fell 17-2 and 14-0 against the Owls of Oregon Tech in the first doubleheader non-conference showdown between the CCC programs.
"OIT is a good quality team, have an identity and execute. They do their jobs well. They showed us some things we need to work on. At the end of the day have to do our jobs." Warriors Head Coach Ryan Harris stated. "Compounding mistakes lead to big innings or take an inning that should be a shut down and they scratch a run. Learn from the mistakes, own it, and figure out how to be better. New opportunity tomorrow morning."
GAME 1 – OIT 17, CRB 2 (8 Innings)
An eventful first inning led by RBI doubles off the upper-class bats of OIT junior catcher Tyler Horner and Corban senior centerfielder Brad Pellkofer opened the first inning in a 1-1 tie. It looked as if we were in for a heavy weight slugfest.
However, the second time Tyler Horner came to the plate, he made sure that Oregon Tech (13-9) 2-1 lead would only grow following a bases clearing double, giving Horner four RBI in two at-bats.
Corban's bats went cold following a strong first-inning showing in the home opener. Corban (4-15) couldn't muster a rally against starting pitcher Patrick Arman, who gave up two runs on six hits over seven innings.
In the same way Corban couldn't rally the bats, the mound proved to be a struggle as well in the early afternoon. Senior starter Bryce Bridge gave up nine runs over four innings, while the bullpen combined to give up eight runs over four innings as well.
OIT was ultimately led by Horner as well as junior designated hitter Chase Hedani, who combined for five hits on nine plate appearances and eight RBI. Small ball was a major factor in the first win of the afternoon for the Owls, who as a team had 17 runs on 20 hits.
GAME 2 – OIT 14, CRB 0 (7 Innings)
The 30-minute break between games did not quiet the bats of the Owls nor ice the arms of their pitchers. The Owls once again used the small ball and seizing momentum off Warrior mistakes, opened a four-run lead in the first. Self-inflicted wounds hurt the Warriors, as a first inning balk as well as a throwing error by allowed two runs to score.
While OIT seized momentum off the mistakes of the Warriors, the home team bats could not find rhythm against the Owls starting pitcher, junior Bronson Chapple. Chapple pitched a no-hitter deep into the fifth inning, before sophomore DH Joshua Miyazawa doubled to give the Warriors their first threat of the evening. Chapple quickly shut down the threat with three straight outs. The Navy and Gold would only muster one more hit the rest of the evening.
Four different Owls secured multi-RBI games in their 14-0 win, led by juniors Matthew Ortiz and Kyle Norton who each tallied two hits, two RBI, and scored two runs apiece. Sophomore reserve Dane Bradshaw even stepped into the game and provided firepower by launching his second home run of the season in the seventh inning.
The Warriors will look to bounce back in this non-conference home series against the Owls at Volcanoes Stadium with their second doubleheader starting at 9am.
