No. 14 Mountaineers Leave No Doubt in Doubleheader Sweep of Warriors

STAYTON, Ore. – The visiting team scoring 27 runs in eleven innings wasn't helping the Corban University Softball team's chances of pulling off an NAIA Top 25 upset today at Stayton High School, as the Warriors fell 11-1 and 16-0 in run-rule shortened games to the No. 16-ranked Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers.

"Tomorrow is a new day, we will learn from the challenges that arose in today's games and bring a reborn fighting mentality with us to the field tomorrow," Warriors' head coach Danyelle Huber stated.

GAME 1 – #14 EOU 11, CRB 1 (6 Innings)

After holding the Mountaineers (11-3, 4-1) to just two runs in three innings, the Warriors (1-15, 0-5) finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run on a fielder's choice by junior second baseman Alexis Figueroa that allowed sophomore leftfielder Josie Landis to score from third.

However, Eastern Oregon would go on to net nine more runs of their own through the last three innings to force the run-rule ending in six innings, as the Mounties rattled off ten hits over the course of game one.

Warriors' sophomore starting pitcher Kate Banks was handed the loss after allowing eight runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of action, walking five and striking out three hitters from EOU. Relief pitchers Amy Jankowski and Alise Olson combined for the final 1.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits in total, with a strikeout apiece.

Mountaineers' starting pitcher Kaylie Hoskins was on point today for Eastern Oregon, tossing a six-inning no-hitter with eleven strikeouts of Corban batters. She walked only two, hit another, and saw another reach via error to allow just four base runners all day.

EOU rightfielder Katelynn Evans went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game one, tallying three RBI and two runs scored. Leadoff batter and centerfielder Haley Tyree was the only other Mountaineer with a multi-hit performance in the series opener, snagging two base hits and scoring two runs. Pinch hitter Gates Leatherwood smashed the only homer in game one over the rightfield fence, which would prove to be the run-rule difference maker in the top of the sixth and netting her three RBI with one swing.

GAME 2 – #14 EOU 16, CRB 0 (5 Innings)

The Mountaineers left no doubt in game two of today's doubleheader, as they teed off on the Navy and Gold pitching staff with 16 runs in five innings of play, resulting in the combined shutout for the two EOU pitchers who entered the circle. Starting pitcher Kylie Parsons picked up her sixth win of season to stay perfect on the year, allowing a single hit in 3.0 innings of work. Relief pitcher Macao Jackson picked up the last 2.0 innings in the circle and didn't allow a single baserunner, picking up two punchouts along the way.

Corban sophomore starting pitcher Vanesa Quinones was tagged for 13 runs off nine hits in 2.2 innings pitched, walking two batters and striking another out. Olson, senior Madison Russell, and junior Emmaleena Wood combined for three runs, two hits, and five walks to close out game two for the Warriors' pitching staff.

The lone base knock of the doubleheader closer for Corban belonged to leadoff hitter and rightfielder Gianna Redman, who beat out a soft groundball to the shortstop in the first at-bat for the Navy and Gold of the contest.

Four different Mountaineers secured multi-hit games in their 16-0 rout, led by Evans and designated player Hannah Tyree who each tallied two hits, two RBI, and scored three runs. Evans belted her own homer in the top of the fourth inning for EOU, her first of the season.

The Warriors and Mounties will go toe-to-toe once again tomorrow in games three and four of their series, beginning at 11am back at Stayton High School.
