LA GRANDE, Ore. – It was all Warriors today in northeast Oregon, as the Corban University Women's Lacrosse team scored four-straight goals through the first quarter and the final seven of the entire match to take a dominant 23-9 score result against Eastern Oregon University on the Mountaineers' Senior Day.
"I am so proud of how this team played today!" shared Warriors' head coach Meredith Pinkerton. "We were able to pick up the energy and play a strong game, and I am grateful for our ability to play our hardest and keep composure even with low numbers, and still come out with a win!"
Looking to creep back over the .500 mark for the first time this season after beginning the year 0-2, the Warriors (3-2) managed to shake off an opening goal by the Mounties (0-10) in the first 12 seconds with an offensive showcase, demonstrated largely in part by senior attacker Sydney Davis and sophomore attacker Megan Lia. After Lia scored the first two Corban goals, Davis picked up her hat-trick with three straight goals in the first quarter, allowing her team to hold a 5-3 advantage once the first period horn had sounded.
With three seconds remaining in the opening half, Lia scored her fourth goal of the game to more than double-up the team lead on Eastern Oregon, as another four-straight goals by the Warriors allowed them to maintain a healthy 13-6 halftime lead.
The offensive attack didn't stop there for Corban, who opened the third by allowing two goals to EOU but squandered the Mountaineers' comeback hopes with another three goals, entering the fourth quarter with an eight-goal lead. From that point on, it was all Navy and Gold at Community Stadium, as the Warriors snagged six more goals to conclude today's contest with a season best 23 team goals.
A game-high seven goals from Lia was the mark to beat this afternoon in La Grande, as she finished 7-for-9 in shots taken, with eight of those nine attempts coming on goal. Davis was right behind her with six goals, followed by freshman midfielder Elsie Marineau who also had a game-high 12 draw controls. Sophomore attacker Naomi Rauch led both teams in assists with three today.
For EOU, attacker Saydee Hetrick was the threat on the attacking end of the field with four goals in five shots, while attacker Jade McCoy added a pair of scores as well. Midfielder Red Pratt was the draw controller for the team with nine successful attempts.
Corban women's lacrosse will make their week-of preparations for the sixth and final contest of the 2024 regular season, which will take place on Saturday, April 20th at 1pm when they welcome the same Eastern Oregon team to the Outdoor Athletic Complex, with the team's Senior Day festivities slated to begin shortly before the start of their match.
