SALEM, Ore. – Consistency and points off the bench were both key for the Corban University Women's Basketball team this afternoon at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, as the Warriors outscore the visiting Eagles of Northwest University 39-6 in points scored by bench players, while nearly doubling up the rebounding battle under the net to win each of the four quarters played and eventually secure an 82-56 home victory.
"I'm super proud of our effort, energy, and team ball tonight," shared Corban head coach Kylie Frizell earlier today. "To have eighteen assists to thirty made FGs is a testament to us working the ball and seek a great shot on every possession. It was great to be able to see Lizzy shoot well, and then Teayona gives us such a spark off the bench."
Unable to shoot below 42% in a single quarter today were the Warriors (8-10, 6-6) and their highly efficient offense, where they once again found their footing this weekend after struggling to shoot the ball well the previous two weekends on the road. Almost nearly clinching a 50% field goal percentage for the game, the Navy and Gold locked up the Eagles (4-13, 3-8) defensively to complete their all-around effort from start to finish, holding Northwest to under 30% from the field while forcing 24 turnovers and scooping up 46 rebounds compared to just 26 for the Eagles.
A 7-0 run nearing the end of the opening period for the Warriors eventually clinched them the distance they needed to start to work their bench in and rest key starters, which provided a hefty advantage against a Northwest team that dressed just ten student-athletes tonight and played nine. Coach Frizell eventually cleared her bench with two minutes remaining in a contest where Corban secured back-to-back double-digit quarter victories to lead by 21 at the halftime break and never looked back.
For the second-straight contest, Corban sophomore guard Lizzy Bennett dropped 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, with four of her six field goals coming from beyond the three-point line where she was 4-for-5. Hopping off the bench tonight and playing 14 minutes was sophomore guard Teayona Hoard, who scored 11 points with four rebounds and a pair of assists in one of her most standout performances thus far.
Eagles' guard Kimberly Carrada Sanchez was a shining light of offense for the Eagles, as she scored a game-high 17 points with four rebounds yet turned the ball over eight times to represent nearly a third of their team turnovers. Guard Saydee Anderson and forward Katie Snow scored 15 and 10 points, respectively, which when combined with Carrada Sanchez, represented over three-fourths of the total team points scored over the course of regulation, as the remainder of the Eagles' starting lineup and bench scored an extra 14 points across six different players.
The Warriors will hit the road next weekend and travel for the first weekend in the second half of CCC action, starting with back-to-back trips to Portland where they will begin with Multnomah (5-13, 3-9) on Friday, January 24th at 5:30pm.
