Warrior Men’s Soccer Conference Home Opener Spoiled by Knights’ Second Half Scores

SALEM, Ore. – It took over three-fourths of the full regulation time before a goal was scored in tonight's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) men's soccer match, as the Corban University Men's Soccer program was unable to keep the Warner Pacific University Knights off the scoreboard and instead suffered a 2-0 setback on their home turf at the Outdoor Athletic Complex (OAC).

An aggressive opening half between the Warriors (2-7-1, 0-3-1) and Knights (6-3-0, 2-2-0) containing eleven team fouls, a yellow card booking and six corner kick tries nevertheless resulted in the second scoreless period today at the OAC following the women's 0-0 halftime draw, with Warner Pac holding the advantage in time of possession but the Corban defense refusing to back down without a fight.

Two more yellow cards later and double-digit fouls on either side of a physical matchup, the Knights found the game-winner on a cross from defender Jose Robles into middle of the penalty box, where defender Wicho Gonzalez found himself unguarded and needed a single touch to net the first goal of the game against Corban redshirt senior goalkeeper Isaac Pureco. Midfielder Bryan Carmona scored eight minutes later on a blown defensive clear for the open-net goal, cementing the road victory for WPU.

Warner Pac midfielder Bodo Calderon took a game-high four shots, two of which resulted in saves by Pureco, while Warriors' sophomore forward Zachary Milczarek led the hometown team with a pair of shots and one coming on goal against Knights' goalkeeper Owen Purvis who secured both his first win and shutout of the season.

Corban men's soccer will return to the pitch of the OAC this upcoming Sunday at 2:30pm when they're scheduled to host Walla Walla University (1-3-0, 1-3-0) following their Saturday off from CCC action.
