SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Women's Basketball program wrapped up the 2024-25 regular season by honoring their four senior student-athletes with a 78-57 rout of the visiting Wolves from Walla Walla University, where the Warriors saw a double-double performance provide the extra drive they needed to pick up a win heading into their third-consecutive postseason appearance.
"Tonight was so much fun to be able to celebrate the seniors and end the regular season with a collective team win," began Corban head coach Kylie Frizell as she detailed tonight's events at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. "At halftime, we talked about how our energy was good and we needed to increase our execution. Gemma's back-to-back three-pointers were a huge turning point for us, and then Maddie with her double-double to clean up the glass while Tori dished out ten assists. I'm so proud of this group, and we are excited to make the conference tournament and the opportunity to take on Oregon Tech next week!"
The final regular season matchup for the Warriors (11-17, 9-13) began just as any other Senior Night would, with redshirt junior guard Izzy Boring, senior forward Madison Hodnett, senior guard Alyssa Wyllie, and graduate student guard Gemma LaVergne all earning their well-deserved recognition for their time committed to the Corban women's basketball program. Despite a career-ending injury for Boring to start the season, she suited up alongside her teammates one final time and took the opening tipoff before leaving to a standing ovation.
In what would turn into a dominant night for Hodnett, the Wolves (7-21, 4-18) attempted to keep pace with Corban's fast-paced offense by utilizing their multiple post players in the paint while the Navy and Gold spread the ball to all areas of the court. After the first and second quarters had come to a close, the Warriors had built a sizeable nine-point lead thanks to their consistency from beyond the three-point arc while finding lanes to the basket and converting on over half of their field goal attempts for the contest.
Hodnett commanded the key on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, as she dropped a game-high 16 points with 11 rebounds, five of which were offensive putback attempts that netted in most of her points scored. LaVergne was right behind Hodnett offensively with 12 points and was 2-for-4 from distance, hauling in six rebounds along the way. Finally, redshirt junior guard Tori Younker did a little bit of everything for Coach Frizell and the Warriors tonight, scoring six points and bringing down seven boards, but most importantly, executed the role of playmaker with a game, season, and career-high ten assists.
Walla Walla was led by their three-headed scoring trio of forwards Natalee Trevino (17) and Chariah Daniels (16) alongside guard Jaylo Bello (16), with Daniels securing six boards for the most well-versed outing by any Wolf in today's contest. Daniels was also 8-for-8 from the free throw line, while Bello was a perfect 4-for-4 and hit two of the team's four three-point buckets.
With tournament seeding already having been announced by the CCC office prior to Saturday's late-night contest with the Wolves, Corban women's basketball will now have three days to prepare for a quarterfinal matchup with No. 22-ranked Oregon Tech (22-6, 18-4), who the Navy and Gold most recently dropped a 10-point decision to in Klamath Falls just two weeks ago. The Warriors and Lady Owls will tipoff at 7pm on Wednesday, February 26th on Danny Miles Court.
