Providence Wins Series Thanks to Back-to-Back Comeback Victories Over Corban Softball

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Softball team saw a pair of wins fall out of their grasp today at Warrior Field in the late innings of a 4-3 and 15-12 doubleheader sweep for the University of Providence, as the Warriors led nearing the end of both contests before the Argos completed comeback bids to clinch both the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) and overall series wins.

"At the end of the day, it's disappointing to not come away with a win today," began Corban head coach Jeff Covalt earlier this afternoon. "But I'm proud of the team for competing hard and leaving it all on the field to the last out. We're excited to see the days ahead and continue to grow and learn week-after-week."

Game 1 – Providence 4, Corban 3

Another early lead secured by the Argos (5-3, 2-1) thanks to a pair of unearned runs in the opening inning was stomped out early with a two-run inning by the Warriors (1-12, 1-2), as junior rightfielder Gianna Redman walked to start the inning and came around to eventually score on a wild pitch, while senior second baseman Alexis Figueroa replicated the exact same process only to score after junior centerfielder Regan McDaniel out down a perfectly placed bunt single and forced a throwing error along the way.

In the bottom of the fourth, Corban secured their first lead of the morning contest when Figueroa drew another walk and sophomore pinch runner Breanna Crosby replaced her to represent the go-ahead run. With the bases loaded, junior first baseman Peyton Foreman sent a ball deep into right field, which provided Crosby with more than enough distance to skirt home on an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Navy and Gold a 3-2 lead.

However, a leadoff double for Providence to start the fifth followed by an RBI single knotted the score up once again, and a two-out rally with nobody on base in the sixth put the Argos ahead 4-3 with six outs between them and a road CCC series win. Having entered the game before the lead was flipped back in their favor, Providence relief pitcher Ashley Mitchell spun a pair of 1-2-3 innings over the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to lock up her third win on the season in the circle with a game-high four strikeouts, while starter Tehneson Ehnes, who allowed three runs on four hits and four walks, secured a no-decision.

Warriors' junior starting pitcher Vanesa Quinones allowed just one earned run over 4.1 innings of work with six hits, a walk, and a punchout, but it was true freshman reliever Miranda Scovil who was responsible for the go-ahead run to score in the sixth inning after allowing only two hits in 2.2 frames worked out of the bullpen.

McDaniel and junior shortstop Isabel Carattini each had two base hits apiece at the plate from the leadoff and ninth spots in Coach Covalt's lineup, respectively, while junior leftfielder Josie Landis nabbed the only other hit of the game for Corban.

Argos' shortstop Sydnee Weber was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate today, scoring the tying run in the fifth and knocking in the game-winning RBI in the sixth to represent the game's most valuable player. Leftfielder Kasidy Yeoman was 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot with a run scored as well.

Game 2 – Providence 15, Corban 12

In the Warriors' highest scoring game of the 2025 season thus far, defense was hard to come by in a contest that featured 27 runs, 25 hits, and ten combined errors between the two conference programs at Warrior Field this afternoon. As was the case for the Argos in all but game two of their four-game slate, a first inning run put Providence ahead early, but a three-run bottom of the first for Corban nixed the deficit thanks to three unearned runs provided by the Argos' defense.

The very next inning, the Navy and Gold saw their first longball of the season blasted deep over the straightaway centerfield fence, as Foreman teed off and bombed a three-run homer to double the Warriors' run total and put the hometown team ahead comfortably at 6-1.

Despite their five-run lead, free passes became an immediate concern for the Corban pitching staff who walked in four-consecutive runs after a third inning RBI single to tie the game at 6-6, followed by two more runs that provided Providence with an 8-6 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning.

Fortunately for the Warriors, Foreman was due up in the bottom of the fourth and immediately put another charge into her second home run of the day down the rightfield line that scored Redman in the process to create a brand-new ballgame at 8-all. A three-run fifth inning for the Navy and Gold followed by a run apiece for Corban and Providence in the sixth sent both programs to the top of the seventh with a 12-9 lead in favor of the Warriors.

Needing just three outs to salvage the non-conference win and an overall series split with UP, the Warriors were unable to keep the Argos off the basepaths and saw their three-run lead squandered into a three-run deficit via untimely errors and base hits by Providence, who turned to Mitchell once again in the bottom of the seventh to spin a pair of popups and despite allowing back-to-back singles, induced a ground ball out to pick up both a win and save in the same day for the Montana program.

Providence's game four starting pitcher Miranda White received a no-decision after allowing eight runs off eight hits along with three walks and three strikeouts, while relief pitcher Nikki Kendall saw another four runs scored under her watch despite a single hit allowed yet walked four batters and delivered three wild pitches.

Scovil started the second game of today's doubleheader and received neither the loss nor win after seven runs off seven hits scored in her 4.0 innings of work, while Quinones was tabbed for her first loss of the seven after the Argos got to her in the seventh with six runs off seven hits and a pair of walks.

Foreman had the single game offensive performance of the season for any Warrior thus far in the series finale, as she went 5-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored from the third overall spot in the lineup, tying the all-time Corban record for hits in a single game set by All-American centerfielder Taylor Eilders (Messerle) in 2015, who now also serves in an assistant role for Coach Covalt aboard this year's staff. Joining Foreman with multi-hit outings was both Redman (2-for-5) and Scovil (2-for-3).

Kendall stepped up big for the Argos from the bottom third of the lineup with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate in addition to picking up the win in the circle, logging three RBI and two runs scored to her season totals while rightfielder Olivia Roe secured a pair of knocks and the team-high RBI count of four.

The Warriors will hit the road next weekend and travel to La Grande for a four-game series against No. 13-ranked Eastern Oregon University (3-3, 2-1) beginning on Friday, March 8th.
