CALDWELL, Idaho – The Corban University Softball team, who was serving as the designated home team during this weekend's four-game series against the No. 24-ranked Yotes of The College of Idaho due to inclement weather in the Willamette Valley, dropped the first two games in southwestern Idaho by final scores of 14-0 and 4-0, the first of which ended in run-rule fashion.
"I thought the team responded well in game two," Corban head coach Jeff Covalt explained earlier today. "Our defense was tight which was a goal we had going into the day, we just came up a few hits short of plating the runs we needed to earn a win against another difficult conference opponent."
Game 1 – #24 CI 14, Corban 0 (5 Innings)
A leadoff home run for the nationally ranked Yotes (11-3, 6-2) sparked a seven-run first inning for the designated visiting team on their home field, as College of Idaho's eight earned runs of the 14 they plated in game one resulted in a five-inning series opener against the Warriors (1-18, 1-7). C of I's starting pitcher Abbey Brooks tossed a complete game one-hitter with a quartet of strikeouts and just one walk to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Corban junior lefthanded starting pitcher Vanesa Quinones allowed all eight of the earned runs to be scored in game one through 4.1 innings of action, striking out a Yote and walking two more. Junior relief pitcher Amy Jankowski secured the final two outs without allowing a run or base hit against her season statistics.
True freshman catcher Mckenna Hanson secured the Warriors' lone base hit in the series opener, while junior centerfielder Regan McDaniel drew a walk from the leadoff spot of the lineup.
Meanwhile, Yotes' leadoff hitter Brinley Iverson hit the leadoff homerun and would go on to have the only multi-hit outing of the day with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBI. First baseman Lena Zahniser and second baseman Audrey Sweet both knocked in a pair of RBI as well for C of I.
Game 2 – #24 CI 4, Corban 0
Navy and Gold junior starting pitcher Kate Banks pitched deep into game two of today's doubleheader, but the Corban offense fell silent after she held the Yotes to just four runs over 6.1 innings pitched. Despite seven walks and six hits allowed with no more than two runs allowed in an inning, Banks struck out five batters to represent the most by a single pitcher from today's contests, with all four of the runs coming in earned against her ERA with an errorless performance from the Warriors' offense.
College of Idaho's starter Drew Williams went the complete 7.0 innings of work and allowed two hits with four strikeouts, a walk, and a hit batsman on only 52 pitches.
Hanson had yet another base hit for Corban in game two, while Banks helped herself out with a single of her own in the bottom of the sixth inning.
A 3-for-4 performance by catcher Hallie Campbell allowed the Yotes to lock up a day one shutout sweep, as she tied the day-high mark with two RBI while five other College of Idaho hitters all secured just one hit apiece against Banks.
Corban softball will conclude their matchups with C of I tomorrow morning and into the afternoon, as they'll wrap up the CCC series at 11am and play their fourth non-conference game at 1pm, both local time for Caldwell.
