CALDWELL, Idaho – After kicking their losing streak to the curb yesterday to start their four-game series in Caldwell, the Corban University Baseball team's offense couldn't hang the runs they needed on the scoreboard throughout today's doubleheader against The College of Idaho, resulting in a 10-0 run-rule and 6-3 pair of defeats to conclude their weekend series.
"In game three, we didn't get anything going offensively, as their starter had all his pitches going," Corban head coach Ryan Harris stated regarding today's doubleheader result in Idaho. "On the mound, we just weren't competitive enough to keep things from getting out of hand. In game four, we came out the gate ready to compete scored two in the top of the first and then on defense we gave them three runs to lose the lead. They hit some balls hard in the third and extended their lead. Eddie came in and was fantastic for four innings and kept us in the ball game. We cut the deficit in half in the fifth, but just didn't have enough quality at bats in the late innings."
Game 1 – C of I 10, Corban 0 (7 Innings)
The Yotes (17-17, 7-14) struck first in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs and never looked back, hammering a pair of homers in the fifth and adding four more runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined to steamroll the Warriors (7-25, 3-18) in game three.
Corban sophomore starting pitcher Avery Williamson lasted 4.0 innings after allowing three earned runs off five hits, three walks, two hit batsmen, and a pair of strikeouts. Junior reliever Tanner Martinez was charged with four earned runs in 2.2 frames off three hits and three walks, striking out one batter in the process.
A complete game effort from C of I starter Dawson Cummins saw the Idaho native earn his first win of the season, as he shutout the Navy and Gold with two hits and two walks while striking out five batters.
Warriors' senior third baseman Ryan Clay and senior leftfielder Noah Owens were responsible for the base hits for Corban's offense in the doubleheader opener, as Clay singled to centerfield in the first and Owens repeated with a single to center in the fifth.
A trio of Yotes completed multi-hit outings in game three of the series, with leadoff hitter and third baseman Ben Gaff going 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored while leftfielder Connor Olsen matched with two hits of his own and tallied a game-high four RBI.
Game 2 – C of I 6, Corban 3
All of the offense for both squads came in the first five innings of game four, starting with a two-run top of the first for the Warriors thanks to an RBI double to leftfield by junior shortstop Isaac Bateman. C of I took back in their own offensive half of the first, with all three runs scoring unearned due to Corban fielding errors.
Another three runs in the third proved to be too heavy for the Navy and Gold to overcome through the remainder of the contest, as junior second baseman Peyton Rickard flew out to centerfield to score redshirt junior designated hitter Joshua Miyazawa in the fifth, which concluded the scoring in their weekend series.
Senior starting pitcher Sam Greenhalgh was unable to pitch past the third inning after he allowed all six runs, three of which were earned, off five hits and four walks for Corban. Redshirt sophomore relief pitcher Eddie Gould was extremely effective out of the bullpen, with a single hit being recorded while striking out a trio of Yotes. Junior reliever Jackson Young pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth with a pair of punchouts.
C of I starter Jackson Cummins limited the Warrior offense to three runs in 4.2 innings off seven hits and picked up six punchouts, with a trio of relievers working out of the pen. Closer Grant Jakobson secured the save in the ninth with two strikeouts and a base hit allowed.
Miyazawa was the offensive sparkplug for the Navy and Gold in their series finale, as he was 3-for-5 from the second overall spot in the lineup and scored two of the team's three runs. Bateman finished with a game-high two RBI while Clay was 2-for-4 and scored the other team run.
Only designated hitter Jace Mahlke had more than one hit for the Yotes in game four, finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored. Second baseman Jack Ingraham and first baseman Darren Smith each logged two RBI apiece.
With having to switch their home-and-away series with Oregon Tech earlier this season, next weekend's home series against I-5 rival Bushnell University (27-6, 17-4) will represent the Senior Weekend series for Corban baseball, with seniors being honored on Saturday. They'll kick the series off on Friday, April 4th with a doubleheader at 3/6pm.
