Corban Baseball Unable to Keep Offensive Pace with Bushnell

EUGENE, Ore. – For the second-consecutive day, the Bushnell University Beacons handed the Corban University Baseball team a pair of road losses as the end of the three-game conference series come to a close today in Eugene, with the Beacons picking up 10-0 and 6-3 victories over the Warriors.

"Need to turn the page and put more effort into our day-to-day work," Corban head coach Ryan Harris briefly shared this afternoon. We have LC State coming to town next week and if we want to get off this losing streak, we need to make some adjustments to how we approach our weekly trainings and trust our gameplan approaches from the first pitch."

Game 1 – Bushnell 10, Corban 0 (7 Innings)

A pair of two-run homers for the Beacons (16-3, 7-2) over the first two innings allowed the host institution to set an early pace and take on one or two runs in every frame outside of a scoreless fifth, holding the Warriors (6-13, 2-7) to just two base hits in an all-around performance from the Bushnell offense and pitching staff that saw the Beacons secure the run-rule victory on a walk-off base on balls.

Warriors' junior starting pitcher Jackson Young was unable to reach the third inning after being tagged for six hits with a walk that resulted in four runs while striking out three Beacons. Senior relief pitcher Sam Greenhalgh tossed 3.0 innings out of the bullpen with five runs allowed on five hits, while true freshman reliever John Brabb gave up just one run on two hits yet walked three batters along with three punchouts.

Beacons' starter Max Chapman pitched a complete game effort in the run-rule shortened contest where he allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out six Corban hitters.

The two Navy and Gold student-athletes with base hits in game three of the four-game series were sophomore designated hitter Lucas Mertlich and redshirt junior catcher Joshua Miyazawa, with the duo each earning singles in the top of the fourth and sixth innings, respectively.

Bushnell second baseman Ethan Stacy continued to have a strong offensive weekend with another 4-for-4 outing in the doubleheader opener today, logging an RBI and run scored to his yearly totals. Meanwhile, centerfielder Will Hudler went 3-for-4 from the leadoff position and scored three runs while two more scored via his pair of RBI.

Game 2 – Bushnell 6, Corban 3

Game four, representing the final non-conference sanctioned contest of the year between conference opponents, played out very similarly to the first matchup on Saturday afternoon, with the Beacons jumping out to a 5-0 lead through four innings and forcing the Warriors to match them on the scoreboard if they'd like to pick up a win this weekend.

Finally in the top of the seventh inning, Miyazawa broke through with a bases loaded triple that cut the Corban deficit to a pair of runs at 5-3 and six outs remaining to do so. Unfortunately for the Navy and Gold, Bushnell tacked on an unearned run in their own offensive half of the seventh and was able to rely on their bullpen once more to secure the weekend sweep over the Warriors.

Sophomore starting pitcher Avery Williamson tossed 3.1 innings and allowed all five of the Beacons' earned runs for the contest on two hits and four walks. Meanwhile, a quartet of bullpen pitchers combined for the remaining 4.2 innings of relief with a total of six hits, one unearned run, and five strikeouts between their powers combined.

Only a 3.0-inning outing for Bushnell starter Kai Keamo with five walks and three strikeouts meant reliever Elijah Breault would earn the win after allowing just two hits in 2.0 innings of work out of the pen with a single walk. Relief pitcher Tanner Won was the Beacon who allowed Miyazawa's three-run triple to score, while closer Blake Stavros had to go 2.2 innings for his second save of the season with a trio of strikeouts.

Joining Miyazawa with base hits in game two today included junior second baseman Peyton Rickard, junior centerfielder Chase Elliott, and junior catcher Knox Hubbard.

Hudler tagged three balls for three base hits to represent the only multi-hit outing in the series finale by a Bushnell positional player, while leftfielder CJ Smith tagged a two-run homer in the bottom of the first for a pair of RBI to lead the Beacons.

Corban baseball will be back at Volcanoes Stadium this upcoming weekend for a pair of crucial doubleheaders with No. 24-ranked Lewis-Clark State College (8-7, 6-2), as the Navy and Gold will host their mascot doppelgangers starting on Friday at 1pm.
