VANCOUVER, B.C. – Playing across the northern US border for the final weekend of regular season play in the 2025 season, the Corban University Softball team suffered back-to-back walk-off losses to the Cascade Collegiate Conference's (CCC) fourth-most win team in the University of British Columbia, as the Thunderbirds picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh of game one for a 3-2 win, followed by a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth in game two to clinch an 8-0 shutout run-rule victory.
"The girls played hard today and battled with a very good team," shared Corban head coach Jeff Covalt. "it's hard to come up short, especially late in the game, but proud of the effort and excited to run it back tomorrow one last time this season."
Game 1 – British Columbia 3, Corban 2
After allowing a first inning run, true freshman starting pitcher Miranda Scovil settled in within the circle to shutout the T-Birds (20-16, 15-11) over the next three innings, while her Warriors (4-39, 2-24) responded in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs to flip a one-run deficit into a one-run advantage. Junior centerfielder Regan McDaniel led the inning off with a base hit and would later score on an RBI groundout by junior first baseman Peyton Foreman, while junior rightfielder Gianna Redman was able to advance to third and score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior designated player Kate Banks.
However, UBC broke through in the bottom of the fifth with a single run to tie the contest at 2-all, but Banks swapped to the circle for Scovil and allowed no further damage defensively. Yet in the bottom of the seventh of their senior weekend series, British Columbia secured a runner on second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and found the walk-off single to left field they needed to score the game-winning run.
Scovil concluded her outing with two runs allowed on eight hits across 4.1 innings, striking out three batters along the way. Banks allowed just a single earned run in 2.1 frames off three hits, with a walk and strikeout issued.
UBC starter Shae Sever improved to 12-7 on the year with a complete game victory over Corban, as she struck out nine Warriors while allowing two runs on two hits and a walk.
McDaniel and senior pinch hitter Lola Benjamin were responsible for the two base hits in game one, with Foreman and Banks each registering an RBI to their season totals.
Thunderbirds' second baseman Kaitlyn Kim was a problem at the plate today for the Warriors, as she finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored from the cleanup spot, while rightfielder Marin Jorgenson also had three hits with an RBI.
Game 2 – British Columbia 8, Corban 0 (5 Innings)
Game two was all T-Birds in an 8-0 victory for UBC, as they scored four runs in the second and three more in the fourth before a sacrifice fly in the fifth enacted the run-rule and completed the day one sweep of Corban softball. Warriors' junior shortstop Leata Senio helped the team avoided a no-hitter with a base hit to lead off the top of the fifth.
Junior southpaw Vanesa Quinones allowed the first four runs of the ballgame in 3.0 innings pitched off four hits and only two of those runs crossing earned. A trio of Warriors out of the bullpen, including Scovil, junior reliever Amy Jankowski, and senior reliever Sage Vanterpool, allowed a combined four runs off five hits over the final four outs for the Warriors.
British Columbia starting pitcher Carleen Murray tossed a complete game one-hitter and a shutout of the Navy and Gold, picking up another nine punchouts for the home team and now walks issued. UBC's offense was led by Jorgensen as she added three more hits, two RBI, and a run scored.
For the final time in the 2025 season, the Corban softball program will lace up their cleats and play out their last doubleheader against the T-Birds tomorrow morning, with games three and four of the series set to begin at 11am/1pm.
