LA GRANDE, Ore. – Despite coming out on the wrong side of a 1-0 final score this afternoon, the Corban University Women's Soccer team played out one of their best defensive performances of the season against an Eastern Oregon University squad that averages over two goals per game, as the Warriors limited the Mountaineers' high-scoring offense to just a single second half scoring play that would have otherwise resulted in a scoreless road draw.
"I'm really proud of the way we played today," Corban head coach Brooke Alteneder began when asked to discuss today's result. "From the first whistle, we stuck to our game plan, competed hard, and played for each other. It was a tight game that only came down to one great shot, but the effort and execution were there. That was a strong response from yesterday's result, and something we can definitely build on. If we keep brining that kind of energy and commitment, the results will take care of themselves.
After holding the Mountaineers (7-2-1, 4-0-0) to just eight shots in the opening half, the Warriors (3-5-0, 0-3-0) saw their scoreless streak come to a close in the 50th minute on defender Joslyn Sizemore's third goal of the season, which would stand to represent the only goal of the contest with the Corban offense being limited to a pair of shots on goal, yet fending off 23 total shots by EOU defensively. More notably, the Mounties took ten corner kicks in the contest, while the Navy and Gold were unable to earn a try from their own offensive end.
Redshirt junior midfielder Delaney Fiedler and sophomore forward Maya Alston each took a shot against Mountaineers' goalkeeper Madeline Barker but came up empty handed, while Warriors' goalkeeper Catriona Burns secured eight saves and allowed the lone goal of the contest. Eastern Oregon forward Ashley Smith led all attackers with five shots, three of which were on goal.
With their two-week road trip to open conference play officially in the rearview mirror, the Warriors will prepare to host their own two-week homestand beginning on Friday, October 3rd at 4:30pm when they welcome Warner Pacific University (1-5-1, 0-2-0) to the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
