SALEM, Ore. – The pitching crew from the RV University of British Columbia Thunderbirds was in full force this weekend at Warrior Field, as the Corban University Softball team managed to score just three runs this weekend across 27 innings played, with UBC clinching the series sweep via an 8-0 run-rule in game three followed by a 7-2 non-conference finale victory.
"Progress was made this weekend, we know what we have to work on moving forward and we're on to the next series," said Corban head coach Jeff Covalt. "Mckenna continues to play well, and Irene had a solid weekend in her home collegiate debut."
The Thunderbirds (12-6, 3-0) picked up the road sweep of Corban (0-10, 0-3) following an impressive defensive showing on Warrior Field, as they limited the base hits allowed while committing zero fielding errors on the day. Starting pitchers Carleen Murray and Brynn Fortier picked up their eighth and second wins on the season, respectively, with Murray clinching the complete game shutout in the six-inning run-rule result.
Warriors' sophomore starting pitcher Miranda Scovil was charged with both losses in today's doubleheader after British Columbia got to her early in both games, with both senior relief pitchers Kate Banks and Amy Jankowski having to make appearances in game three and four of this weekend's series.
At the plate, freshman rightfielder Irene VanDyke was the only Navy and Gold member to record at least one hit in both contests, as she finished the day 3-for-7 overall. Sophomore first baseman Mckenna Hanson clinched her sixth multi-hit outing of the season in game two of today's doubleheader in just ten games played to date. Through nearly a fourth of the regular season scheduled contests, Hanson is blasting a .483 batting average with a .621 slugging percentage via four doubles in 14 hits.
The Warriors will hit the road for the next two weekends, beginning in Portland when they're set to visit Warner Pacific University (6-8, 2-1) this upcoming Saturday and Sunday at Milwaukie High School. First pitch for both doubleheaders is scheduled for 11am.
