MILWAUKIE, Ore. – The Corban University Softball program either led or forced ties in both contests of their day one doubleheader on the road against Warner Pacific University played out at Milwaukie High School, where the Warriors eventually dropped 4-3 and 6-3 decisions to the Knights who took advantage of costly Corban miscues that resulted in unearned runs and ultimately, the doubleheader sweep.
"Today's results were tough but we're still progressing," detailed head coach Jeff Covalt. "We scored our most runs, drew our most walks, and stole our most bases of the season to date, just need to clean up some defense and we are improving. The season is a marathon, and we are moving forward every week."
The Warriors (0-12, 0-5) saw improved outings from every member of the pitching staff that saw playing time today, as they limited free passes and gave up less than double-digit hits in both contests, yet timely offensive lulls combined with untimely fielding errors resulted in their own scoring deficits while providing Warner Pac (10-8, 5-1) with runs that crossed home plate unearned. Sophomore starting pitcher Miranda Scovil and senior reliever Vanesa Quinones tossed nearly identical stat lines in the series opener, allowing two runs on three hits, three walks, and a pair of strikeouts, with the only difference represented by Scovil's runs not counting against her earned run average. In game two, senior starter Kate Banks took the loss after allowing four earned runs in 2.0 innings, while senior relief pitcher Amy Jankowski held the Knights to a single unearned run in 4.0 frames.
Two members of the Navy and Gold collected multi-hit outings against Warner Pac, beginning in game two by sophomore first baseman and leadoff hitter Mckenna Hanson who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior leftfielder Isabel Carattini pitched in two hits and an RBI as well behind Hanson in the lineup, while she was the lone Corban batter in game two with multiple hits with a 2-for-3 game and another RBI. True freshman Kaiya Peterson slashed a base hit in both contests and led all Warriors in RBI total for a single contest with two in the doubleheader closer.
Corban softball returns to Milwaukie High Scholl tomorrow morning for another 11am/1pm doubleheader against the Knights.
