Turnovers Prove Costly as No. 20 Warriors Upset by Jaguars in NAIA Opening Round

WICHITA, Kan. – An unprecedented end to an unprecedented season came to fruition earlier today at the Garvey Center in southeastern Kansas, as the No. 20-ranked and No. 3-seeded Corban University Women's Basketball team never got their offense fully implemented during their NAIA National Tournament Opening Round matchup with No. 14-seeded Texas A&M University San Antonio, turning the ball over 21 times in an eventually 94-82 first round upset at the hands of the Jaguars.

Entering as the underdogs, the Jaguars (24-8) took advantage early of countless Warrior (26-5) turnovers across the opening half, as the Corban favorites turned the ball over 14 times in the opening 20 minutes alone which led to 14 of TAMUSA's 39 first half points. While the Navy and Gold have made a name for themselves from beyond the three-point arc, it was the Jags who punched first in making 5-of-10 from distance to lead by three at the halftime break. Texas A&M San Antonio led by as many as ten points in the first quarter despite Corban shooting nearly 50% from the field overall.

The Warriors would cut the deficit to a single point to open the third quarter directly out of the halftime break, yet TAMUSA continuously forced the full court pressure upon Corban's offense to eventually force 21 total turnovers while committing just eight themselves. Texas A&M San Antonio allowed just five three-pointers to the Navy and Gold in their first round matchup, which ties for the third lowest in a single game this season. In the second half alone, the Jaguars shot 29 free throws, missing on just three attempts the entire afternoon in a 48-foul, 65-free throw postseason outing for both NAIA programs.

Three separate Warriors scored over 20 points, with the remaining six Corban student-athletes scored no more than two points apiece and eight combined. Graduate student center Emilia Bishop battled to the conclusion of her collegiate career by scoring a game-high 28 points and hauled in 11 rebounds alongside four blocks for the seventh double-double outing of her Warrior career. Redshirt sophomore guard Jersey Huerta added 15 points, six boards, and five assists, while redshirt junior guard Jenna Albrecht added 21 points and five rebounds.

TAMUSA was led by 20-point performances from guard Hailee Brandon and forward Kiera Sanderlin, with forward Aniyah Lewis and guard Evelyn Lorenzo adding 19 and 13 points, respectively. The mid-range pullup shooting was exceptional for the Jaguars, as they assisted on just 12 of 28 made field goals and shot 36 total free throws by drawing fouls in the paint.

The Corban women's basketball program graduates five senior student-athletes, including three of their four All-Conference honorees in Bishop, Albrecht, and redshirt senior guard Tori Younker. Frizell will look to reload nearly her entire starting lineup entering the 2026-27 season, with Huerta representing the sole returning starter alongside ten returning bench players. The 2025-26 CCC regular season and tournament champions will begin preparing for their title defense season next fall term.
