Simpson Claims Solo-Goal Result in Corban Women’s Soccer Season Opener

REDDING, Calif. – The Corban University Women's Soccer Team opened the 2026 campaign on Friday afternoon with a hard-fought battle against Simpson University, ultimately falling by a narrow 1-0 margin at California Soccer Park. Despite the result, the Warriors showcased resilience throughout the contest, receiving a strong performance between the posts from redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jordyn Labajo, who recorded six saves in her Corban debut.

"We have a lot of work to do, but we learned a tremendous amount from today," shared Warriors' head coach Tim Kagey. "Simpson exposed some areas where we need to improve, and now it's about responding the right way. The encouraging thing is that our student-athletes continued to battle, never stopped competing, and gave themselves a chance late. We'll learn from this and be a better team because of it."

Simpson controlled much of the early possession and attacking pressure by generating nine first-half shots, but the Warrior defense consistently weathered the storm. Labajo turned away attempts in the sixth, eighth, 12th, and 15th minutes to keep the contest scoreless through the opening stages.

The Red Hawks eventually found the breakthrough in the 25th minute when Taylor Brooks connected on a chance created by Maylania Mikaele, scoring the lone goal of the match. Corban responded with increased attacking opportunities of its own, highlighted by a shot from Kylah Sprague and a late first-half effort from Eliza Nisly that forced a save from Simpson goalkeeper Jenna Sosa. The Warriors went into halftime trailing just 1-0 despite facing significant pressure from the home side.

Coming out of the break, Corban settled into the match and generated several quality chances in pursuit of the equalizer. A team save prevented Simpson from extending its lead early in the second half, preserving the one-goal deficit and allowing the Warriors to remain within striking distance.

The Navy and Gold attack began to find more space over the final 30 minutes. Corban earned two second-half corner kicks and put together opportunities from Sprague, junior Emma Franklin, and junior Leah Valentine. Valentine's shot in the 75th minute and Sprague's attempt in the 88th minute both forced saves from Sosa, but the Warriors were unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle.

Labajo headlined the defensive effort with six saves, facing 14 total shots and eight shots on goal.

Offensively, Sprague led Corban with two shots and one shot on goal, while Nisly and Valentine each placed one effort on frame. Corban finished with six total shots, three shots on goal, and three corner kicks.
