SALEM, Ore. – In a matchup worthy of its billing, the No. 6-ranked Corban University Women's Volleyball team battled No. 4-ranked College of Idaho in a marquee early-season Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) showdown on Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, with two of the NAIA's premier programs trading momentum swings throughout the evening. The nationally-ranked rivals pushed the contest to a decisive fifth set before the visiting Yotes escaped with a 20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13 victory despite another new career-high kill mark from Corban senior outside hitter Emma Bischoff.
"Tough loss tonight against a strong College of Idaho team," began Warriors' head coach Kim McLain. "We knew we needed to serve aggressively to disrupt their offense, and at times we fell short of that. I'm proud of our team nonetheless and the fight they showed throughout the match. We will continue to learn, grow, and get better each day. We're looking forward to tomorrow's matchup and the potential to keep improving."
With a potential first place in the CCC standings and national positioning on the line, neither side gave an inch from the opening serve. The Yotes entered the night undefeated at 11-0 overall and 4-0 in conference action, while Corban carried a 10-3 record, 3-1 in CCC play, and three-match conference winning streak into the heavyweight clash.
The Warriors struck first in the opening set after overcoming an early 6-2 deficit. Corban pieced together a dominant 11-2 stretch behind the play of senior outside hitter Kendra Bittle, freshman opposite hitter Greta Van Gemert, and junior middle blocker Gracee Robertson to seize control. The Yotes narrowed the margin to 19-17, but the Navy and Gold responded with timely kills and key blocks down the stretch to secure the 25-20 victory and energize the home crowd.
Set two was the definition of back-and-forth collegiate volleyball at its finest. Corban appeared poised to take a commanding lead after building a 24-20 advantage, but the nationally-ranked Yotes showcased why they entered as one of the NAIA's final two undefeated programs. C of I rattled off six consecutive points to steal a dramatic 26-24 win and even the match at a set apiece.
Undeterred, the Warriors answered in the third frame. Neither side led by more than five points throughout the set, with Bischoff and Bittle carrying much of the offensive load for Corban. After the Yotes trimmed the Warrior advantage to 24-23, College of Idaho committed a service error on set point, allowing Corban to reclaim the match lead with a 25-23 triumph.
The fourth set saw the momentum swing back toward the visitors. After Corban grabbed an early 6-1 lead, the Yotes methodically worked their way back into contention behind their balanced front-row attack. C of I eventually pulled away midway through the set and forced a winner-take-all fifth frame with a 25-19 victory.
The decisive set delivered one final showcase of two national contenders trading punches. Neither team led by more than two points for much of the stanza, and Corban eventually claimed an 11-10 advantage after a Bittle kill. However, College of Idaho closed the match on a 5-2 run, surviving a late Warrior rally to secure the 15-13 decision and hand Corban its first home loss of the conference schedule.
Bischoff turned in one of her strongest performances of the year, leading all players with a 23-kill, 16-dig double-double. Bittle added 16 kills, four service aces, and 10 digs for a double-double of her own, while Van Gemert registered 12 kills and two aces. Senior setter Nadeiah Howard directed the attack with 31 assists, 12 digs, and an ace, while sophomore setter Kawena Crowell contributed 19 assists. Defensively, junior libero Dani Street matched Bittle with 10 digs as Corban placed four players in double figures in the category.
For the Yotes, Jessica Stires powered the offense with a team-high 22 kills on a .372 attacking percentage, while Abigail Flerchinger added 14 kills and Alexa Wheeler chipped in 10. Shaynee McWilliams orchestrated the attack with 57 assists and 17 digs, while Avery Lewis and Kadance Jacobson tallied 17 and 10 digs, respectively. College of Idaho finished with a .211 team attacking percentage and 65 kills in the five-set victory, compared to a .174 clip for the Warriors.
