Game Dominated by Warriors, but Beacons Win in End

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Despite a game that was completely dominated shot-wise by Corban's men's soccer team and five saves by junior goalkeeper Aaron Franklin (Red Bluff, Calif.), a goal by Northwest Christian in the 85th minute led to a 1-0 Warrior defeat Thursday night at Mike Kelly Field.

After defeating the Beacons of Northwest Christian earlier this season, the Warriors stepped onto Mike Kelly's turf field and seemed to dominate NCU in every offensive category. Unfortunately for Corban, the one category that counts in the end went the way of the host Beacons in the 85th minute of play.

Off a Warrior turnover, Northwest Christian's Chris Senick took a flick pass from Jacob Acedo with 84:55 showing on the clock and deposited the ball into the back of the net past a diving Franklin for the game's lone goal.

Just 59 seconds earlier, Warrior senior defender Daniel Steffen (Oregon City, Ore.) was brought down in the goalie box leading to the Warriors' best scoring chance of the evening. The ensuing penalty kick attempt by junior Jared Rust (Palo Cedro, Calif.) sailed high over the crossbar, breathing new life into the Beacons and setting up the game-winning heroics by Acedo and Senick.

After being held scoreless for 565-plus minutes, Northwest Christian snapped that streak in dramatic fashion and in the process pushed Corban out of the playoff picture for the time being with only four games remaining on the Warriors' schedule.

Offensively, Corban out shot the Beacons by four (13-9) that included a two-shot advantage (6-4 & 7-5) in each half. On the corner kicks, Corban got three in the opening 45 minutes versus NCU's two. The Beacons knotted that offensive category in the second half with the lone corner kick of the final 45 minutes.

Rust and sophomore Ayouba Moussa (Maradi, Niger) tied for the game-high in shots with three each, while three other Warriors registered two shots apiece.

Franklin stood between the pipes for the full 90 minutes for Corban en route to recording his team-high in saves. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian's Cuyler Ziegler snared a game-high seven saves in a complete-game performance en route to picking up his first career shutout and the first "goose egg" in Beacon program history.

With the loss, Corban falls to 4-9-1 overall, including 2-6-0 in conference play.  Meanwhile, Northwest Christian snaps an eight-game losing streak and improves to 2-10-1 overall and 1-8-0 in conference play. The Warriors will return to the field again on Saturday, October 18th, when they travel east to Caldwell, Idaho to take on the South Division leading 'Yotes of The College of Idaho beginning at 2:00 p.m. in a rematch of last weekend's 2-1 C of I victory in Salem.

NOTE: Saturday's Corban-College of Idaho game will be played at Syringa Middle School due to an unplayable Simms Field on the campus of C of I. For directions, click here.
