CALDWELL, Idaho – Freshman Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) registered a team-high nine kills to go along with senior Rashelle Davenport's (Kalama, Wash.) seven kills and 10 digs, but Corban's volleyball team fell to the 'Yotes of The College of Idaho, 3-0 (24-26, 14-25, 15-25), Saturday inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
Going head-to-head with its second straight nationally-ranked opponent and playing without the services of sophomore Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.), Corban hung tough with C of I for the first set before registering a mere two more combined kills than hitting errors over the final two sets.
In the opening set, Corban tied the set early at 2-all following a kill by Davenport before a 3-0 run by the host 'Yotes saw the score at 5-2. The College of Idaho extended its lead to as much as six points (14-8) following a kill by Kristin Henning before the Warriors used a 13-7 run to tie the set at 21-21 following another kill by Davenport. A pair of 2-0 runs by each team that was highlighted by a Land kill found the set tied at 23-all. A Davenport service ace handed Corban's its first set-point, but a hitting error by the Warriors re-tied the set at 24-24. C of I was handed a gift with another Corban hitting error before the 'Yotes closed out the opening set (26-24) via a Sarah Buhler kill.
In the second set, The College of Idaho jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and continued to build its lead with Corban getting no closer than eight points (17-8) following a 'Yotes' hitting miscue. Senior Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) recorded the Warriors' final two kills of the set, as Corban got within 10 points each time (22-12 & 23-13) before The College of Idaho closed out the middle set by the final tally of 11 points (25-14).
In the third and final set, Corban got a kill from senior Rachel Gowen (Oregon City, Ore.) to tie the set at 1-all before The College of Idaho jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Warriors would get as close as four points (10-6) following a Reeher kill before the host 'Yotes extended their lead to as much as nine points (22-13) via a Corban hitting error. Three C of I kills would close out the third set (25-15) and the match in a three-set sweep for the home team.
Along with Land and Davenport, Reeher and Gowen would register five and four kills respectively. Junior Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) handed out a team-high 13 assists, while sophomore libero Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) anchored the Warriors' back line with a team-high 11 digs. At the net, Gowen registered a match-high four blocks to lead Corban's team total of 5.0 blocks.
The College of Idaho was led by Megan Spinks and Naomi Reimer, who each tallied a match-high 11 kills. Reimer also handed out a match-high 24 assists, while Whitney Owen registered a match-high 17 digs from the back row for the 'Yotes.
With the loss, Corban falls to 7-8 overall, including 5-5 in conference play. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho improves to 11-6 overall, 8-2 in conference action. The Warriors return to the court on Tuesday, October 7th, when they go head-to-head with conference rival Concordia beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
