SALEM, Ore. – Senior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) scored a team-high 21 points off the bench on 9-for-14 shooting from the field, as Corban's men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, 72-65, over the Bruins of George Fox Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
In the second of three straight games for the Warriors, four players scored in double figures led by Douglas' season-high performance in 31 minutes of action.
George Fox opened the game with a lay-in by Bryan O'Connell less than 90 seconds into the opening half before Corban knotted the score at 2-all via a jumper in the paint by freshman Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) less than 20 seconds later. O'Connell handed the visiting Bruins its final lead of the game (4-2) via another lay-in with 17:57 showing on the clock. Junior Paul Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) tied the score for the final time via a jumper before hitting another "J" that gave the Warriors a two-point lead (6-4) with 16:57 left in the opening half. Corban would extend its lead to as much as 15 points (36-21), as Douglas hit the final bucket of the half via a jumper in the paint with 38 seconds remaining to give the Warriors' a 15-point cushion at halftime.
In the second half, Corban used a 14-12 run over the opening five minutes and 17 seconds to grab its largest lead of the game (50-33) following a three-pointer by sophomore Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) with 14:43 left in the contest. George Fox would battle back to within six points (68-62) via a 29-18 run over a span of 14 minutes and eight seconds, but could not get any closer as Corban hit a pair of free throws followed by a game-ending breakaway dunk by Douglas for the final margin of seven points (72-65).
Along with Douglas' scoring, the Martin brothers -- Paul and Clay -- added 17 and 16 points respectively as Clay scored 14 second half points on the strength of a trifecta of three-pointers over the final twenty minutes. Cronrath added 10 points and six rebounds, while Paul Martin grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with Douglas and Clay Martin's five-rebound performance each.
George Fox was led by Alex Stockner's game-high 22 points off the bench, while Evan Atwater and O'Connell chipped in with 15 and 8 points respectively. On the boards, Atwater grabbed a team-best seven rebounds to go along with Stockner and Travis Toedtemeier's five-rebound effort each.
As a team, Corban shot 25-for-51 (49.0%) from the field, while registering a 4-for-8 (50.0%) clip from beyond the three-point line and an 18-for-30 (60.0%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, George Fox shot 25-for-64 (39.1%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-21 (28.6%) showing from three-point land and a 9-for-15 (60.0%) performance at the charity stripe.
With the win, Corban improves to 1-2 on the young season compared to George Fox's mark of 0-2 this season. The Warriors will return to the floor on Saturday, November 22nd, when they conclude their three-game series in three days against the Boxers of Pacific University of Oregon beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Forest Grove.
